Fed Up With SSRIs: Can Tianeptine Help?

Posted by Roger on June 8, 2003, at 3:18:30

Hi

Am quite new to this support group. Have been on various SSRIs for a long time. Lustral(Zoloft in USA) Seroxat (Paxil) and now Prozac. They do nothing to dissipate my depression and dysphoria. But I am really afraid of coming off prozac because of withdrawal symptoms. Actually prozac was prescribed to come off seroxat. So I am going on vaccation and my destination is India, where the novel Antidepressant tianeptine is sold. Can I try it without coming off prozac ? If I find it working then I hope I can gradually come off prozac. Is there any interaction between prozac and tianeptine ? Please advise.

From my understanding, tianeptine can be taken in combination with an SSRI. Tianeptine is a drug that I have considered taking. Of course it is probably best to mix meds under medical supervision.

Some sniplets (is that a word?) from http://biopsychiatry.com

In some cases, SSRIs may even act as thymoanaesthetisers which diminish the intensity of felt emotion; by contrast, a mood-brightening serotonin reuptake-enhancer like tianeptine may intensify emotion instead.

Reboxetine may be safely combined with an SSRI. More surprisingly, preliminary studies suggest reboxetine can actually reverse tranylcypromine-induced hypertensive crises. The "cheese effect" is triggered by ingesting tyramine-rich foods. Thus NARIs plus MAOIs may prove a potent form of combination-therapy.

Stablon is Tianeptine. Got it confused with Endronax(reboxetine).

Sorry about that. Not sure about Tianeptine mixed with SSRI. A re-uptake inhibitor with a re-uptake accelerator? Interesting.

i don't know about any interaction or how exactly this combo would be. But it seems like it'd be kind of a pointless combination-- seems like they'd more or less just neutralize their effects (i wonder if starting tianeptine while having been on an SSRI for awhile could even induce some SSRI withdrawal-like effects). It seems like it'd be kind of like taking an agonist w/ a same receptor antagonist-- not much point.
i may be wrong though. Good luck.

Thanks Paul.

If Stablon can't be mixed with prozac, what should be the next ? I have tried to augment SSRIs with tegretol, buspar, parlodel(bromocriptine) and once I tried buproprion also in fairly high doses. (300 mg a day) but nothing worked and a freedom from prozac seems very unlikely. In such cases what additional drug can I have to have an antidepressant effect? Remember I have to be on an SSRI because my brain has become too familiar with that crap. Even a slight reduction in dosage sometimes ends up in huge misery. I wish I wouldn't have been introduced to Lustral which was my first SSRI experiment. What led me to lustral (Zoloft in US)is still there intact, and I am struggling to come off lustral's big brother (or father?)Prozac. How hard it is to suffer all the symptoms of an illness even on a medication that is supposed to treat it ? Can anyone help ?

A NARI (nor-adrenaline re-uptake inhibitor) would be worth a try. As mentioned (mistakenly) in my first post Edronax (reboxetine) would probably be a good choice.
The dopamine agonist pramipexole (Mirapex)is another option. There are no contraindications between Mirapex and SSRI's or NARI's that I know about so if reboxetine doesn't offer much relief you can try Mirapex or add it to the reboxetine.
