Strattera failure

Posted by littie on June 7, 2003, at 22:56:55

After a month of giving it the old college try, I found myself more irritable and tense than I've been in years. I took 80 mg Strattera a day and found it incredibly constipating. Did nothing for my depression and my personality turned into the Evil Witch I was before I discovered Prozac 10 years ago. She was NOT a happy person. Anyway, after two days of barely being able to string two words together--I was that tense--I called the pharmacy today to refill my Lexapro and took 10 mg. I'm already less angry at the world. Whatever good my doctor thought Strattera might do for my atypical depression and ADD (can't take stims) wasn't happening. Ah well, sometimes it's good to be reminded that I'm just a bit mentally ill and I haven't been taking meds for frivolous reasons. I'm back in SSRI country.

Hi Littie.

Effexor and Wellbutrin are two antidepressants that have been used to treat ADD AD/HD. I don't know how effective they are generally, but you can find citations on Medline that support their utility. Both of these drugs exert effects on noradrenergice activity, as does Strattera. Effexor can be very SSRI-like and makes for a potent antidepressant. If you stick with SSRIs, it might be worth adding Wellbutrin to see if it helps with ADD.

What is it about stimulants that you have trouble with?

Past history of substance abuse. My doctor would NEVER prescribe me anything that might make me the least bit euphoric! I tried Wellbutrin and had major dysphoria and Effexor really frightens me, with all of the things I've heard about the withdrawal. Of note--I had major, major brain zaps all day yesterday after I'd been off Strattera for just a day, very tearful too. Nasty drug. All symptoms subsided within a few hours of taking a Lexapro.

I'm glad things resolved so quickly. What about Cylert for the ADD?

No way. He would never prescribe anything like that. I do feel much better today, thanks.
