NO Lithium OROTATE 4 Me - here's why:

Posted by Janelle on June 4, 2003, at 16:30:44

I read all the threads on Lithium Orotate (some of them went sailing above my head and I will re-read them), but I myself came up with the idea NOT to try it and here's why:

It is sold OVER-THE-COUNTER, through the Internet, etc., which means that it is NOT REGULATED by the FDA or any *authority* and given the HORRIBLE experience I had with a non-prescription thyroid med (it shut down my thyroid) I will not dare go that route again.

Plus, I asked my pdoc about it and he, who is into natural alternatives, had not even heard of Lithium Orotate! I brought him two printouts from here about it! He was fascinated by them, but that was the extent of it for now.

I'm not going to put something in my body that is so highly concentrated that you only need a little of it and for which there is no blood test. This is just my decision, but I thank everyone who contributed info on Lithium Orotate. At least I know it's out there and I know some details about it! It scares me, that's all. I am on a relatively low dose of Lithium Carbonate that I may even be taken off if an increase in Depakote which the pdoc just initiated works for the frequent mood swings, especially the hypomania. Any comments, feedback more than welcome!

Also too CONTROVERSIAL, based on here! (nm) » Janelle

I have tried Li orotate and became severely depressed within a day..I stayed with it for 2 more days to see if I would improve, but depression never subsided..Evil stuff for me..Reminded me of my Lexapro experience.

Hi Janelle,

Sorry about the lithium orotate. I was hoping it would be helpful because of the side effects you were getting. The problem is there is not enough lithium in it at recommended doses to be effective for bi-polar diorders. Lithium Orotate was studied over 30 yrs. ago and not much was heard since. I thought it might be one of those "pearls" buried in the sand - probably not the case. Anyway, I see your up to 750 mg!! on the depakote. Hope this works well for you.
It should do a lot to help stabilze you. Let me know how you're doing and take care.

Paul

Abstract:

Lithium orotate is a popular nutritional supplement that has been marketed in the United States for treating migraine headaches, alcoholism, bipolar disorder, depression, and epilepsy. The effectiveness of these claims is backed by the research of Dr. Hans A. Nieper. However, caution should be exercised when interpreting his research. These findings are based on correlational studies and the subjective reports of his patients. There have been no experimental studies that show that lithium orotate is a valid treatment for any medical or health related issues. Dr. Nieper claims that lithium orotate doesn’t have any side effects because of the low amount of lithium that actually enter the blood stream. However, research indicates that the renal side effects of orotate may be more severe than carbonate or citrate. Finally, the cost of lithium orotate varies depending upon the supplier. In some instances it is more expensive than taking FDA approved lithium carbonate or citrate.

Please email me again (mottermx@jmu.edu). The article is long and I don't want to take up a great deal of space
