Hell Pfinstegg,

Dr Hutto tells me in one of his notes that there is no onsite accommodation unles you are enrolled at Peachford BHSA partial hospitilization program or intesnsive outpatient program. Can you tell me what this, is this some kind of private Scheme?

He also tells me that I could get discount on the treatments if I can prove my salary is below a certain limit by providing them with a verified IRS1040 form for a previous year. What's an IRS1040 form?

There is an in-patient psychiatric hospital next to the building where Dr. Hutto's office is- that must have been what he was talking about. And you wouldn't be staying there. Other than that, there are no motels within walking distance; you do need a car, both to drive the hour from the airport to North Atlanta, and to drive the five or ten minutes from the motel you choose.

He was referring to the American yearly tax form showing your annual income. You could bring your UK annual tax form showing your annual income for 2002. He does have a sliding scale, with considerably lower costs if your income is in the lower brackets, which is, of course, usually the case with young people and students.

hi denise,

i know the answer to one of your questions:
"What's an IRS1040 form?"

the u.s. internal revenue service (irs) uses its 1040 form for folks to file their income taxes ..... so one way to verify your income is to show your income tax filing forms, aka IRS 1040 form.

i hope this helps you.

Pfinstegg,

Thanks for the explanation, didn't you say that you stayed at onsite accomodation was that at the inpatient psychiatric hospital?

With regards to getting a car, I'm really reluctant to have to do that, I've never driven on the right side of the road before, never been to the States so don't know my way round. Not sure I have the motivation or brain power to even think about getting around by car. I was hoping I could get a bus from the airport to the hotel.

Also, I'm trying to keep costs down so was really hoping there would be accomodation on site. Maybe this will never materialise but I'll keep considering it and try to work out how I can do this as cheaply as possible. I know I'm depressed and I'd happily spend £3000 if the treatment was guaranteed to work but I'd feel really cheated if I forked out loads of money only to find the treatment didn't work so I have to try and keep to some kind of budget.

Thanks again for all your help.

Denise

No, unfortunately there's no accomodation next to Dr. Hutto's office. If you decide to do it, the office manager, who is extremely nice and helpful, should be able to give you the name of a residence motel- these are the least expensive, and have kitchens- within walking distance. Be sure to mention that you will need a supermarket and grocery store close by. Also ask her if there are any vans or buses servicing the hospital and surrounding areas.

I was discussing TMS with my pdoc today. He was very positive about it- considering it equal to ECT but without the possible memory problems. He did say that it tends not to last very long- usually a few months for the majority of patients, and that boosters are often needed. But he said that psychiatrists are finding that ECT is the same. I wanted to be sure that you were fully aware of this before committing yourself to come such a long way for treatment.

Pfinstegg,

Thanks for the advice, I will speak to the Office Manager, Dr Hutto has given me the office phone number.

I've also been enquiring into VNS, there doing a couple of studies here in the UK, they still need two more people to do a trial. Trouble is on the days I don't feel so bad VNS seems a bit drastic and I'd want to give up smoking a couple of weeks before having an operation and I know I can't do that right now. Doestn't make sense does it, some days I'm suicidal and other days worried about having to have a general anaesthetic. I don't want to risk having a stroke though. As they've only got two places left I need to make my mind up quick.

I'm still seriously considering rTMS, I've got nothing to lose (apart from time and money, which doestn't seem that important anymore) and if I don't try it I'll never know. I yearn for the days when I took one little 20mg Seroxat pill and it worked within hours.

How are you feeling now?

Denise

Hi Denise..I have seen a few posts about VNS here over the past few months, but I did not get a clear impression about how helpful it is. It seems to be a bit drastic to me. too.

As to me, I am in my fifth month after TMS; the first four months were really good- depression-free. Now, I am experiencing a bit more depression- still nothing like I had prior to the TMS in January. so I am back on an AD- 10 mg. of Lexapro, plus all the fish oil, vitamins, etc. The Lexapro seems to be working extremely well, too. I envision my future as having booster TMS as needed, and probably staying on an AD. Dr Hutto told me to do that, but I was feeling so good that I ignored his advice!

I don't know for sure, but I think that the TMS helped the AD (Lexapro) work well- just as ECT is reported to do. The TMS was really effective, for me, and absolutely free of negative side effects- not one bit of confusion or memory loss. I've read that it acts to increase the blood flow in the left frontal area of one's brain, as well as calming down over-activity of the HPA axis and encouraging more normal levels of neurotransmitters. I know it doesn't work for everyone, but I hope you'll be one of the ones it does work for, if you decide to go ahead with it.

Hi Pfinstegg,

I'm glad to hear you're still doing well. I'm just trying to gauge how treatment resistant you were prior to having the rTMS. I did a search on your name and for some reason can't find any old threads. I consider myself extremely treatment resistant this time round having failed many drugs and combinations of drugs, dothiapen, dothiapin and lamictal, prozac and dothiapin, Sertraline, Seroxat, Sertraline and Lithium, Remeron, Effexor and even Nardil (which is supposed to be just as effective than ECT. As I've said before the only drug that seems to really lift the depression is Zyprexa. I know that you said that Paxil and Zyprexa had helped you but I was just wondering what other medication you had tried and failed with. For instance, had you tried something as supposedly strong as Nardil and if so what were the effects?
