Wellbutrin and SEIZURES

Posted by Cortney on May 16, 2003, at 17:07:34

I just wanted to warn prospective Wellbutrin users.
My fiancee' ended up having seizures from Wellbutrin. He was on it 5 days.

Thanks for your contribution. May I ask if he had any predisposing factors? Was he dehydrated? What dosage was he taking?

Thanks.

He had no predisposing factors.
No dehydration.
I don't know the exact dose, but it was the start up dosage, so it was low.
He was in great shape, no serious health problems (only seasonal allergies and he was not taking any other perscription or OTC drugs at the time)
Since the seizures, his memory is for crap.
He has hardly any recollection of the week the seizures occurred and now his memory has good and bad days. He never had that problem before.
It was and is scary.

Since I have a history of eating disorders, I was also warned about the possibility of seizures from wellbutrin (this was 2? years ago). I don't know why there is a connection there, but I was wondering if he also has that kind of history. take care, judy

The study of Wellbutrin that produced seizures
was on women with eating disorders. AFAIK there
in not much more correlation between the 2.

Quite common in seizure is loss of memories
just prior to a seizure and patchy ability
to create memory for a little while.

I have had a few seizures, with no lasting effects, which is very common. The big risk
is falling or driving while having one.
I was always standing when I had one, and
tended to hit my head when I fell.

From what I've read, the increased risk was for bulimics specifically.

Do you know if the purpose of the research was to see if Wellbutrin helped bulimia (which I had) or depression in people with bulimia? Or maybe the sub-group that had seizures all had bulimia in common- thanks, judy

yes, I had bulimia. I'm just curious why there's a connection between seizures/wellbutrin/bulimia. take care, judy

I wish there was some mitigating factor or risk factors so we can at least be prepared if this would happen again on any medicine, not just antidepressants. BTW, not on any now.
No eating disorders, no other health problems.
He just had the seizures from the Wellbutrin.

Sorry, I don't know what the connection is. But the cautions stem from the late '80s when WB was first put out. Some patients who had bulimia had seizures. I don't know if there is less risk perhaps with the sustained-release form that is now available. I also wonder if the patients that had seizures were actively bulimic or if they had just had it previously. Let's hope someone with some biological/chemical knowledge can enlighten us!
