Parnate

Posted by TapiocaMonk on May 14, 2003, at 18:57:18

Just started taking Parnate today (10mg for 3 days, then 20mg). Approx how long should it take for me to feel something?

Wow--you're the third person I'm responding to today about Parnate. I'm hoping that more depression sufferers will be willing to try it and more doctors willing to prescribe it. I've been using it for the past 18 years.
You've got to give it about 3-4 weeks to kick in. Be patient. And 30 mg. is the standard minimum effective dose (or maintenance dose). The maximum is 60 mg., although some people have gone higher than that. Keep posting. I'll try to answer your questions,

Yeah, lots of Parnate questions. It should take several weeks for the mood-elevating effects to kick in, but you may feel considerable agitation before that. 3-4 weeks before any real positive impact sounds about right.

If you don't know and are interested, there is a group on yahoo specifically for MAOI's. It has some very knowledgable people there--just like here.

Parnate doesn't really make me nauseous. It seems to act simply as an appetite-suppressant. For me, I feel those effects within the first week (but you're probably starting at a lower dose than I usually do, so you may have to wait a bit longer)

Im on Nardil for 18 years now and must get off. I have gained 100 pounds and can't even lower dosage a tiny bit without sinking into hell. Does Parnate promore gaining weight like Nardil does? I was told it does the opposite.

Hi, I am new to the board but not to MAOI's. I have been taking them for over 25 years and wouldn't trade them for anything. Nardil put a lot of weight on me as well plus made me sooo sleepy that I switched to Marplan. For over 10 years it was the best thing in the world. It runs the middle ground between the sleepiness and weight gain of Nardil and the sometimes too awake and too 'Food? What the hell is that?' of Parnate. The only reason I am on Parnate now is that I was finally diagnosed as mildly Bipolar and Parnate is the only one of the three that won't throw someone into a manic phase. I think you will be fine on Parnate and will drop the Nardil weight pretty quick on it.

Hi,
I was on Nardil and it helped me tremendously with depression. However I gained some 15-20 lbs on it. Nardil also gave me sleep problems. I switched to Parnate and the weight came right off. I don't notice it being an appetite suppressant though. In any case, I haven't gained any weight on Parnate.
Good luck to you.
