NARDIL: experienced users please share dosing info

Posted by also-ran on May 10, 2003, at 20:50:31

I recently started Nardil + clonazepam after failing a trial Lexapro + clonazepam to treat a fairly avoidant case of social anxiety.

My doctor, by his own admission, has very limited experience w/ MAOI's and has started me at 45mgs/day in three divided doses. He wants to keep me at this dose for at least a month before going higher. From what I've been able to glean from this board it seems like this is an extremely conservate approach.

Please help me by sharing any and all knowledge and experience you have with regard to all aspects of dosing e.g.: your starting dose, titrating dose up(how soon, by what increment, how long before increasing again) and what your most effective dose is.

sincerely

It probably won't work for SP until you reach 90mg. The first time I took nardil it seemed like it did'nt kick in for 3 months. If it wasn't for my Dr. telling me to keep taking it I would have gave up before then. I think you could increase by 15mg. a week. Good luck

I noticed the SP affect at 75mg... I recently decided to taper off the drug in most part to to the weight gain. I could have handled the other side effects.

The drug seemed to do great for my mood and depression, the social anxiety part kind of wore off after about 4-5 months. I am sure if I upped the dosage I would have continued with the relief but I was afraid the side effects would worsen..

Good luck

Much thanks for the input guys, anyone else out there with experience?

Lawrence: How long did you take to reach 90mgs and what were the side effects at that dose?

Nick: Sorry to hear that, hope I don't have to make the same choice between internal, self-generated shame and personal pride/societal pressures. Did your weight gain result from increased appetite, or decreased metabolism?

Hi There,

I believe it resulted from both. I tried dieting for a month and working out 4x a week and didn't lose a pound. My metabolism definately slowed down but the weight gain probably came from the carb intake. I couldn't lose the weight for the life of me like I was use to being able to do.

I hope this side effect doesnt happen to you. Maybe at a lower dosage you will be fine

Too conservative. Within 2 weeks you could get up to 60mg. Stay on that for 4 weeks to determine response. No response, raise to 75mg for 2 weeks, no response, 90mg. 4 weeks at 60mg is the standard time for it to work.

I started at 30mg - stupid!. At the end of week two I was up to 60mg. After 4 weeks on 60 it kicked in. Then raised it to 90mg - even more brilliance!

You've choose a great drug. Give it time but!

I got up 90mg. in 3 weeks. Also you have to remain at a steady dose of 90mg for up to 6 weeks or more before getting the benefits of it. The side effects are worse when starting off this rapidly. Side effects were: Short term memory, cognitive impaiment, anxiety, impulsiveness and derealization.
They were not severe enough to cause me too much distress however. The dosing was something like this:

day1 - 30mg
day4 - 45mg
day11 - 60mg.
day18 - 75mg.
day22 - 90mg.

Are you on the 3rd week now? The big side/effects hit during my 4th week. Anorgasmia (totally sucked but I hang through it)

Hope you don't receive this effect... Mine eventually improved with time, but the beginning was tough

Actually, I like the sexual side effects of Nardil and I think my wife likes them even more. It sometimes takes hours to have an ejaculation.
Ths can be a bit exhausting, but I need the exersise!
