Slipping - what can I do?

Posted by Snoozy on May 3, 2003, at 14:28:21

Hello - I feel as if I am sinking into a big D depression, and I don't know what to do. Not that I haven't been there before, that just makes it even more depressing. Every year there just seems to be less and less to hang on to.

I've just been staring at the wall, not able to do anything. I know a lot of you have been here, how do you get through it?

I'm thinking of adding something to my 400mg of Wellbutrin. I have some Prozac, and also Depakote in the house. I know if I take some, it won't really have any effect (if it has any at all) on my mood for weeks, but sometimes I just feel like I need to do *something*.

I don't know whether I should just try and sleep through this as much as I can or what. Any advice? Thanks.

Geez - I feel so lame. Somehow this got posted somewhere else, I meant to have it here.

If you feel yourself slipping, it's time to see your psychiatrist immediately. There are just so many possible treatments, one or more of which will stop and reverse the decline. And, not all treatments take a long time to work. You're already taking an AD so an augmentation strategy might be the right thing to try. Whatever the case, see your psychiatrist.

Now as to getting through the bad times the thing that's helped me is recognizing (at least intellectually) that the bad times won't last forever. Somewhat cold comfort, but true nevertheless.

Feel Better Soon,

Britt

Hi Snoozy!

try taking a walk somewhere right now; I have noticed that just the physical act of walking itself is an energizer, and the act of getting out of the house helps to disrupt the depression's "in a funk" pattern.

that is a simple quick thing that you can do immediately.

the next step may then be for you to start your own investigation program to research new meds, which you can do right here by posting your symptoms and asking questions; that will empower you and make you feel that you are positively moving forward with a real plan of action!

regards,

Charlie

Things can work immediately, actually. Many, many times when I had a drug pooping out, or some such phenomenon, I've added something else and felt dramatically better within days, even the next day. Most recently, this was adding Lexapro 5mg to my Prozac. In the past, often it was adding a low dose of a TCA to an SSRI (adding 75mg Anafranil has rescued me many times).

Good luck,

Matt
