Remeron...Does it Cause OR help relieve sexual s/e

Posted by McPac on April 30, 2003, at 21:55:58

I'm reading 2 different viewpoints on various boards re: Remeron.
Some say it is CAUSING their sexual side effects.....others say it is HELPING theirs...Anybody? Thanks!

Bro, just letting you know I got a script for Remeron today.

I'll give Anafranil a week to get rid of this wide awake 4 am thing bullshit then add 7.5mg Remeron.

You are a legend. Period.

Ace.

Remeron usually plays a faily good role in improving sexual functioning, mostly due to its 5HT2 antagonism (which is of course the major culprit with SSRI-induced sexual dys.). This enhancing ability is also compounded by its alpha-2 antagonism. On the other hand, I've had heard a few rare reports of remeron inducing sexual side effects, although as to why, who knows. As for arousal, I found that low doses (15-30mg) were like other antidepressants in that they reduced or slightly dulled my sexual desire. But the higher I went, there was definitely a sexually-activating effect -- most likely due to the increasing adrenergic effect.

Hope this helps.

JB

I'm praying and pulling for you Ace! I know you'll be feeling MUCH better once you get past this current washout phase! These withdrawal/washout periods can really, really suck....but once you get yourself on an effective med/combo that really works, and you can then go back to enjoying all the little things in life, then things are beautiful again....your better days are just around the corner....do whatever it takes to get you through this period.....try to rest, sleep and eat well....use the Xanax you have if you need to....I've been reading your posts...hang in there!

Thank you very much!!

5HT2...."which is of course the major culprit with SSRI-induced sexual dys"

(I read that nitric oxide was the factor in ssri-induced sex. dysf.....???)THNX!

McPac-

NO does have a minor role in SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction, but the main cause is that they agonize the 5ht2 receptor plate (this also has an effect on lowering prefontal dopamine and furthers sexual dysfunction). Another smaller role is the 5HT3 receptor. Consequently, this is why mirtazapine works so well as an adjunct to combat an accompanying SSRI therapy or as a sexual performance drug on its own. See link for more of an explaination...

By the way, just for reference, the two prominent receptors involved in ejaculation are the 5HT1A and D2 receptors.

THANKS Jb!!
Still curious as to why so many (I've read 24%) people taking Remeron say it CAUSES their sex. dysf.?
Thanks again!

Remeron and sexual s/e

Hi...

I'm curious... my doc has suggested low dose (15) remeron to help with minor sexual dysfunction I have on effexor. But my understanding is that remeron at such a low dose would be very sedating and probably stimulate appetite. Is this the case?

Thanks,
Lia

I don't know the biochemistry of this stuff at all, so this is strictly my personal experience: I'm on Remeron only after having been on Zoloft only. I was frustratingly dysfunctional on Zoloft; fully functional on Remeron. I seem to have some decrease in desire, but I think this is probably a psycho-social issue rather than the drug.
