Effexor--and what we are NOT told

Posted by bobo on April 30, 2003, at 18:42:35

Hello
Was at the docs today and something happened.I take EffexorXR 150mg a day for depression for about 10 monthes now and know all about the side effects and withdrawl problems(stopped cold turkey once--bad idea)and was there to get a refill.
Was waiting with the nurse to get it(due to unemployment I get the samples)and she said since i had not seen the Pdoc in some time I needed to make an appointment so he could see me for a checkup--I had seen this new doc once and did not like him--at our first visit I said I wanted off the effexor--his response was to up the dose--so I never went back to him.
So since I still need to take the effexor(we all know why)i made the appointment.
As I was sitting there a women came and sat down. She started to talk to a man--turns out it was my pdoc--i did not remember him--and then he left.I asked the women what she thought of him--she said she liked him.The talk turned to medicine--he had just changed her to Effexor--I asked her if he had told her any of the side effects or thw withdrawl problems--her answer was NO
I told her to read up on it before she starts--was trying not to scare her--and then left,
I just find it hard to understand WHY he said nothing about this drug before giving it out to someone--by now it should be widely known that this drug has a few bad points--and yet--we are never told---was it her fault for not asking --maybe--but in my opinion she should have not had to---and whould like to hear from you all on this point--as well as Dr Bob--

P.S.--I am not making a statement on how well or not well effexor works---just in the left out info--be well all

I believe it is a doctor's responsibility to inform his patient about any medication the doc chooses to prescribe. Unfortunately, many p-docs seem unwilling to do so, or simply neglect to do so. I do think a patient has a responsibility to ask questions if they have them too, but neglecting to mention such a serious thing as the withdrawl syndrome is pathetic.

I was put on Buspar (weaning off finally) and none of the various pdocs involved in initially prescribing it, and then the newer pdocs I went to said a WORD about how you CANNOT, MUST NOT eat or drink anything with GRAPEFRUIT while on this med.

I forget how I even found out about the grapefruit but it is documented on the Net!

I'm not sure a fatal reaction would occur if someone on Buspar had grapefruit, but some kind of BAD, SERIOUS reaction would happen.

And like I said, NONE of several pdocs said boo about this when prescribing or monitoring my (lack of) progress on it. Shame on them.
