New to Effexor - prescribed for increasing energy

Posted by New on April 22, 2003, at 17:35:53

I went to the doctor assuming that I had a thyroid deficiency (less energy, tired, constantly cold, etc. becoming more noticable within the last year). Turns out my thyroid levels were fine, but he gave me a 5 week sample of Effexor XR - 37.5 for the first week, then 75 thereafter. I am fortunate & don't have any symptoms of anxiety or depression. Is this drug overkill for me? I didn't see any previous posts just for increasing energy, and saw several where the drug makes you more tired/lethargic. Any comments/ideas ? Should I stick it out for the five weeks & see what happens?

I would definitely stick with it. While I had some signs of depression, mostly I was just tired. Then I started taking the Effexor and it has helped so much in the energy area especially. I used to get home, watch some tv, then something else and avoid anything I had to do. Now I'm up at 6 every morning and heading to the gym and after that, having a really great energetic day. 5 weeks would be a nice start and see what happens. I saw results within 2 weeks and just like any meds, these may make you tired, but for some of us, they really help. it's all in how your body responds. Good luck and keep us posted.

It gave me lots o'energy too, esp at higher doses! (nm)

I've been taking it for about 3 weeks now and have been really sleepy. Is it normal to have this effect at first? If so, how long will it last? I need more energy too, I'd love that side effect. Also, I began taking it at night before I go to bed. Could this help? Thx.

It's interesting how people react to psychiatric medications. Effexor is one of those drugs that when you first start taking it it causes an activated dreamy state. I have found this state to be very similar to the effects of tryptamines (serotonin analogs).

I also take effexor and I have found that it works very well as an antidepressant, but I don't know what to think about it being used for increased energy... Why not provigil or concerta?

I have found the opposite problem, whilst I was never any good at getting up in the mornings, I am now far worse at getting to sleep and waking. I find myself able to lie in bed for hours in a semi-dreaming state, unable to make it out of bed.
