They have helped me over really distressing depression/anxiety symptoms (several times), but not made me unrealistically happy. Just more normal. There are also several different types, so if you dont get much help with one, it may be worth talking to your doctor about trying another.

Have you tried psychological treatment for your social phobia too? Using both meds and therapy can be really helpful- they arent mutually exclusive.

You may try a MAO like Nardil/Parnate
these are very effective for social
phobia, when others fail.

But never expect a drug to turn you from
a boockworm into Robin Williams - unless
you're bipolar.

I do agree - you need to combine the drugs
with some therapy. This works best.

The drugs should enable you to do the
work necesary to be the person you want.

Just like steroids only work when you
lift weights, not just by sitting around.

Good Luck

I agree. ADs do not make me happy. They alleviate my depression. There is a difference. Happiness is something everyone, depressed or not, needs to always be working at. It is not a static state of being. It is more realistic to think of life having happy moments, and hopefully more of these moments as time goes on.

In the US Declaration of Independence it says "Life, Liberty and the *Pursuit* of Happiness". I find this a significant way to word it. It recognizes that the human condition is to always be striving toward happiness. I think that is realistic.

I recommend the book, "Finding Flow: The Psychology of Engagement With Everyday Life by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi".

It is about how to apply the author's research that people are happiest when really engaged in activities that are at the right challenge level, etc. It is a good read.

I also agree that therapy might be something to consider, in addition to meds.

When I'm just on antidepressants, no mood stabilizer, after about 3-4 weeks, I feel so good, I have so much happiness and sympathy for everyone. I am so talkitive and understanding. I just want to explode and let all my love pour out to the whole world. Sound kind of weird? It is...but I'm Bipolar.
