No, I don't think they know exactly how fish oil operates on mood, but my pdoc told me not to be quick to chalk it up to one neurotransmitter like that. As it happens, my thought had been that it operates on serotonin, because when I perused the med abstracts, there were studies showing that omega 3 did affect serotonin functioning in *muscle* tissue and *heart muscle* tissue. But my pdoc said that it probably is not so direct as that.

One thing that omega-3 does, I think, is that the bilipid layers that make up cell membranes do need DHA. And EPA, acc. to Dr. Stoll, promotes antidepressant action, but it is not clear exactly how.

I am in the middle of Dr. Stoll's book. If I learn anything more, I'll share it.

Some material my pdoc gave me indicates that omega-3 lowers the inflammatory response, among other things. And that omega-6 and omega-3's each promote certain kinds of prostoglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes, but perhaps different ones.

I have taken them both simultaneously and they worked OK together.
