Neurontin for Bipolar I

Posted by White Stone on April 9, 2003, at 12:06:39

After recurring bouts of depression that didn't get significantly better on antidepressants, I was finally diagnosed with Bipolar I. The PDoc yesterday prescribed Neurontin and Wellbutrin (I will be ramping down the doses of the previously prescribed Zoloft and Zyprexa at the same time as starting with low doses of the new meds).

After doing some research on the internet yesterday about Neurontin, it appears there is little data on the efficacy of Neurontin (an anti-convulsant) for Bipolar...some even saying it is just slightly more effective than a placebo.

Does anyone have experience with this drug?

I have lots of experience (3g/day) for bp1, and my feelings are it was simply a sugar pill. I also worry that you are on an AD, that class causes a lot of instability for me. take care, judy

My mother has BP (not sure which category I or II - very long depressive periods between intervals of (psychotic) mania).

She initially was on AD + lithium, but bladder continence problems made it necessary to find an alternative to lithium. Her psychiatrist prescribed neurontin for the mood stabilizer. It is working well for her.

Neurontin is not yet "approved" as a mood stabilizer for BP, but I think there has been some success in using anti-seizure drugs for this purpose.
