Fish Oil - what is the monthly cost?

Posted by btnd on April 3, 2003, at 5:45:18

I'm sorry but I didn't have time lately to research the correlation between omega3 and depression. So could anyone (just in two words) let me know what would be the monthly cost of such supplementation and which brand of oils is the most cost effective? Thanks.

The prices range a lot. My pdoc had recommended twin labs as cost effective, but I don't know the details.

I find Carlson's liquid fish oil cost effective. Each bottle contains 40 teaspoonfuls, each teaspoonful has 800 mg of EPA and 500 of DHA. the bottle costs around $20 in most places, I think. My food coop carries it for $16.

But I can't say I've done an exhaustive comparison.

If you have access to Costco (in the US) you can buy 300 capsules at reasonable dose for about $7-8. I take 6-8/day, for an EPA intake of about 1.2 g/day and DHA about 1 g/day. So the monthly cost is less than $7.

There are lots of other brands, and you can pay much more, but from what I can tell there's not much benefit to buying the more expensive brands. I suspect many come from the same source anyway. With many dietary supplements, there's a several-fold range of variation in price for the same thing, so you need to research it a bit to get the best deal.
