AD not working, would you add another med to mix or

Posted by LA on March 20, 2003, at 9:17:08

If you are taking a AD which is not working ( having already increased med to highest dose) Would you add another med to the mix? OR just simply start all over again with something else?
I have to do something fast.( I don't want to come out of the house or even answer the telephone. Is this the social phobia I seen people refer to?)

Hi,
normal procedure would be to start with a new AD if you haven't responded at all after about 6 weeks on the high dose. Only if there is a partial response do you normaly see pdocs adding another drug.
Hang in there

Hi LA, If you and your doc feel that 1 AD is not working whatsoever, yes, IMO, I would try another one. What other AD's have you been on, may I ask? My brother hit the highest dose of Prozac, and had to switch to Wellbutrin with Zoloft, and it helps him. What other meds are you on, if any? Have you been diagnosed?
Are you taking any meds for the social phobia you experience?
Please, please keep me posted:-)
Kristen

I have taken nardil, prozac, wellbutrin, lexapro, celexa and effexor and probably one or two others but my memory is so
> bad at this point I can't remember.
I have been diagnosed with depression. I have always thought that my not wanting to interact with people at certain times was just part of my depression(when I'm feeling well I really love a good party and lots of people) Not until reading posts on this site did I realize that my behavior fits social phobia. Last week I had several places I was suppose to go, tickets to an event. I didn't care that I had paid for the ticket I wasn't going, I just did not want to come out of my house or answer the telephone. I told everyone I was sick, well I guess I really am sick but the only thing most people understand including my husband is the flu or a virus. So I had the flu or a virus, now what will I have next week?
Are there certain meds just for social phobia?> >Thanks

Hi LA,
Part of my depression also includes my not wanting to interact with people at certain times too (when I'm feeling well I really love a good party and lots of people) I have felt exactly like you do on this. However, I have never been diagnosed with Social Phobia. Are you giving yourself the right to change your mind about the uncertainty of getting tickets, etc. and deciding not to go, OR do you actually feel it's Social Phobia?? I ask because it is ok to not want to come out of your house or talk on the phone sometimes. IMHO, if it becomes a debilitating, ongoing occurrence, then you may have the Social Phobia you speak of here. I'm not a doc, just a Psychology student, and I study this stuff. I'm glad that your husband understands, and for the "most people" -try not to worry about what they think-I did that and I wasted a lot of energy! I do hear your feelings.
From my experience, I can't believe how much you sound like me here-but a few years back. I made excuses because of how I was feeling, and feelings are justified, you never have to expalin them, you don't owe anybody an explanation, but what helped me was that most of the time when I turned down offers, whether it be to go shopping, or to a game, or to a movie in the past, I wasn't really thinking of others. I'm not saying you don't of course, not at all, the point I want to make here is that in actuality, the people that I was afraid of emotionally, turned out to be my best remedy for the social phobia. I realize that people do like you and if you just be yourself, it usually works out good. I have a hard time with this a little still, but I am realizing that life will pass us by if we don't try to get out and do the things we want to do. Some days, of course, like I said, we need to allow ourselves to not go somewhere or do something, but we also have to give ourselves a chance. IMHO, and by no means trying to diagnose, it sounds to me as if you may be suffering from some insecurity? rather than full blown Social Phobia?
Have you been diagnosed with SP?
As for meds for SP, all I know is that Effexor-XR is for GAD-which has some Social Phobia components. Paxil is or once was approved for Social Phobia. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Does anything of what I'm saying here make any sense to you? I hope so.
I hope to hear back from you, I am quite interested in your post.
All the best always always and always,
Kristen:-)
