Benzos and stims

Posted by JackT on March 21, 2003, at 15:54:52

Does anyone mix, say Xanax and Ritalin to overcome GAD and ADD at the same time?

I have been battling mainly GAD, but the benzos by themselves make me sedated. I wanted to add a stimulant to see if that would overcome the sedation.

Lately, I am taking Haldol, which I find somewhat stimulating, and then adding Xanax. This combo is working for the anxiety -- but I'm still somewhat sedated. I thought Ritalin or Adderall may help instead of the Haldol, but I wanted some back-up before going to my pdoc with this. Any thoughts?

Fatigue is generally dealt with using Provigil these days.

You may also want to consider Straterra for your ADD. My doc wants to use it soon because stims make me anxious.

Desoxyn makes me the least anxious. There's never a problem combining a stim with a benzo, that's fine. Sedation with a benzo usually goes away if you take it everyday for a few weeks.

Benzos and stimulants can be a very good combination, as Utopizen said. I take Adderall and Klonopin daily, and Xanax as needed. The sedation etc. from the benzos wore off in a week or two for me, but the Adderall (added later) helps with ADD and also has strong antidepressant effects.

Klonopin and Adderall seem to have a "special synergy" often mentioned by others on this board -- this can be an excellent combo, and I recommend it based on my experiences.

Provigil (modafinil) is helpful for wakefulness/alertness, and I liked it quite a bit. I had no anxiety problems with it, but it just didn't help enough with concentration (which is why I switched to Adderall). It's definitely worth a try, especially in conjunction with benzos.

My pdoc says Provigil can be good for both ADD and depression, but is kind of hit-or-miss -- some people respond very well, others just don't get much benefit. He considers Provigil (and benzos) very safe if used appropriately. He's a little more hesitant with stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin, but prescribes them as he sees appropriate, and is quite comfortable with my use of Adderall together with Klonopin and Xanax, based on my positive response.
