I Finally Rode My Bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Krissy P on March 14, 2003, at 21:30:53

I know this may not be of any interest to some, but I'll tell ya, I haven't exercised in months and I rode my new bike for 1/2 hour. When I got off, it felt like I had been on a horse, and my pack of smokes didn't even look appealing. Geez, I sound like a little kid-but it is so true.
**What is anyone's opinion on the feel good chemicals that are produced when we exercise????
I had a weird taste in my mouth, and my nose picked up a strong amonia-like scent. I really would be very interested in anyone's psychological, but more so, biological view on why this may have occured????? I was thinking wow-I really wouldn't have to take meds if I just exercised-but then I snapped myself back into reality lol Anyway, I'm smoking now, but for about an hour of my life-I felt like the old Kristen-fit, happy, and cigs made me wanna puke.
I would really love to hear others' opinions on this:-)
Thanks, Kristen

Hi Kristen,

Good job. Exercise is VERY important for BP II patients. Check out this link:

The follow link provides interesting information regarding exercise induced positive changes in brain chemistry. It does not specifically address the endorphin issue that I think you are referring to, but it is very informative. I find it interesting that exercise plays such a central role in maintaining good mental health.

Hi, nope-I'm not a mom. But hope to be someday:-)
When I came back and just saw the pack of smokes-I almost vomited, but it could have been that I think I did a little too much on the bike ride.-I doubt it. I know I am smoking too much nowadays-almost 2 packs a day! Ya know, I think you're right-my body is saying no more poison. Wow, I never thought of that, and to think I am poisoning my body with smokes makes me realize-it is NOT a good thing.
Thanks so much for the reply:-)
All the best, Kristen
*as I light up a bloody smoke:-(*

Remember when we were younger and we took off our rollerskates how weird it felt. Like you couldn't walk. I miss that feeling. Don't think I'll try skating again though. Tried a cartwheel this past summer and about killed myself!!

yes I remember I want to feel that way again:-) (nm) » Eggy

Way to go, Krissy!

I definitely do experience positive mood from exercise. I know this, and yet I get out of the habit of exercising and have difficulty motivating myself to return to it. When I do, once I get past the initial obstacle of how hard it is to break out of the stiffness and slowness from not exercising for a long time, I always wonder how I could stay away for so long, as it clearly has mood benefits. For example, coming home from a day at work, if I feel anxious or tense, exercising can make me feel so much calmer and relaxed--this effect is immediate. It also has ongoing positive mood effects.

definately!!! I now realize it! (nm)

Kristen,

That's great that you went out biking. Exercise always helps me feel a lot better long term, rather than doing something like overeating and regreting it later. I've had that amonia smell too - if I run for over an hour in hot weather. I can't remember why it occurs, but it's completely normal to have happen. I sometimes get that "runners high" (happens with other sports too) when I go for a run at a fast pace or run for several hours - I think it's because of something called endorphins.

I increased the Serequel to 150mg on Friday and felt fine. I heard that it was good to take Serequel 12 hours before you want to wake up so on Sat I took it at 8pm (big mistake) and then went out to dinner with my friends - an hour later I was starting to feel drugged and they really noticed. And I ate a lot more than I normally would have - and I had dessert which is something I rarely do. I think I know what you mean about how hungry the Serequel can make you. I'm never taking it before I eat again. But the great thing is that I was wide awake at 6am the next morning - didn't feel like a zombie. But I still wonder if I can tolerate 300mg of it. I guess I'll have to find out.

hi Lisa, I'm kinda glad to hear that you get that amonia smell after exercise. I think it's normal. Do you smoke cigs? I rest my case about the Seroquel. I have a problem with this drug-only because of the weight gain/appetite effect it seems to have on me and, as you said here, maybe on you. I hate that aspect of it.
So you are eventually going to get up to 300mg??? wow I took 300mg at one time and I didn't notice weight gain that much-I'm wondering if it may depend on the dose?-example- the post "dose dependent". Seroquel has worked well for me, and I don't think I am going to play around with it. I take the 100mg at night, so I'll see........
yeah, the good thing was that you were wide awake at 6am--or was it? lol
Take care, Kristen

Kirsten,

About waking up at 6am - kind of a bad thing considering that this is the beginning of spring break and I should be able to sleep in. I've never smoked before.

When you said that you took 300mg, did you take it just once or for awhile? I remember reading that you've taken the Serequel since '99. Did the weight gain hit you right away, and then it stabilized or was it ongoing for quite awhile? My shrink says that the average weight gain is 5-10 lb - but I know that once I start gaining weight, I can't stop, and I'll gain a lot more than that.

Hi, I took the 300mg of Seroquel for like 2 weeks. I started out at 200mg though. The weight gain didn't hit me right away-but has been ongoing. Now that I'm down to only 100mg-the weight gain has calmed down a little-plus-I'm eating better, drinking more water, and trying to ride my bike more:-)
Keep in touch:-)
