MAOI'S, exercise and physical health

Posted by lansur on March 10, 2003, at 19:03:39

I am about to start parnate, an MAOI. (I have taken nearly every anti-depressant drug there is without success!) I am very concerned about developing high blood pressure that could lead to heart problems & stroke etc. I am middle aged, physically very fit and have no heart or B/P problems. I am training for my first marathon in May. (I missed a marathon last fall since my psychiatrist advised against it, for whatever reason.) Since I am somewhat obsessive and/or compulsive, I must always "push the envelope" when working out. Can I still continue my training, long distant running and do the marathon while on MAOI's? Am I playing with fire or just being overly paranoid? Thank you!

Shameless Plug for maoi group.

Join it if you haven't already, people there are very knowledgable about the med you are about to start. By the way, I have no personal interest in you joining, it is not a for-profit group or anything.

Jack,
Are you on a MAOI yet? Is it working?

Since you seem to be in good health, i doubt this (Parnate) would be much of a problem. It depends on the dosage too. But i'm not a dr. so i dont know. But if you'd have to decrease exercise for it that seems not-worth-it.

I just started Nardil about a month ago, and I'm also very active. I've noticed it makes me feel a little weaker. I don't put as much energy into my workouts as I used to. I used to channel my stress with exercise, and ended up almost pushing it too far (I am a very anxious person) Now, with my stress greatly reduced, I don't feel like I have to exercise to feel better, I just do it now because I enjoy it. I feel much better now. MAOI's are worth the drawbacks for me definitely.

I've been on a high dose of Parnate for many years and haven't had any problems with exercise. I can exercise as strenously as I want.

How high did you go? I was shocked to see your name come up because I was doing some research on parnate and found some of your posts from three years ago on the subject. I remember that it had pooped out on you and then you were re-trying it with mixed results? Curious how it worked out. Are you still on it?

Parnate I'm not so sure about, but nardil will really make you feel sluggish.
