Abilify - Constipation? - Suggestions?

Posted by SLS on March 2, 2003, at 21:55:42

Is anyone experiencing constipation with Abilify?

I've never had to deal with constipation as a side-effect of medication. Can anyone throw out a few suggestion on how to deal with it?

Thanks.

Oh thats a tough dilemma. As you know. Scott, I take Abilify,, ITs possible you could divide the dose into to doses per day.....

Have you monkeyed with diet,, Like adding an Apple or Two per day.. or dried Fruit like Apricots??

How bad is this,, an annoyance? GOOD luck

Ground flax seed meal. Add a tablespoon to your cereal. It doesn't tast bad. It should do the trick.

Here is my recipe for staying away from constipation. It might not be what you are looking for so feel free to flush this suggestion down the toilet.
1/2 cup prune juice
1/2 cup applesauce
1/2 cup wheat bran flakes
1/2 cup whipped topping (Cool Whip)
1/2 cup prunes (canned stewed prunes)
(Diabetics may use "no added sugar" applesauce and "light" whipped topping.)
Blend ingredients, cover, refridgerate, keep as long a 1 week.
Take 1/4 cup portion with breakfast daily. Adjust as needed according to results.

Just an idea. And be sure to increase your water intake. Water is the best stool softener. Lots of water!

Many people have issues with "staying regular" when it comes to their bowel habits.

I think you have to figure out what you can use now and as a maintence should this become a long-term issue.

For most people I know, a couple of Fig Newtons, celery, broccoli, apples or meloms are you best first line up. These are the least harsh and eassily maintainable.

Also adequate hydration is important. Most people drink pretty good in the summer because its hot but mot dont realize how much insatible water loss occurs in the winter too.(Suggestion: drink it early in your day so you dont have to be potty tripping and distrubing that good sleep we all need...)

These are my best ideas for people who want something that will help but not disrupt the life that they started taking these meds to be able to enjoy.
Be Well.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I think I'll start first with apples, brocolli, and dried aprocots. Then, maybe one of the oils suggested.

Do you think Omega-3 fish oil would help? The flaxseed sounds interesting too.

By the way, where the hell does all of that sh_t go when none is being evacuated? Maybe I don't want to know. I just hope I can get things started again before I end up with sh_t for brains. On the other hand, this might represent an improvement.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Yes constipation can be a problem with abilify, I recommend as others have, fluids, lots of fiber, regular exercise also generic stool softeners work.
