Klonopin question?

Posted by Peter S. on February 12, 2003, at 12:02:17

I took .5mg of Klonopin and noticed no effects. Does Klonopin need to be taken on a regular basis before one sees any benefit?

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Peter

I have been taking Klonopin off & on for about 2 years now. To answer your question, .5 mgs never did a thing for me. I take it for aggitation & seizure prevention. I take 1 mg twice a day. If you are used to stronger meds, or meds that act quicker, then .5 probably won't do much for you. For instance if you have taken Ativan, Xanax, or Valium, especially at a higher dosage, .5 mg of Klonopin will feel like taking a placebo. Just my personal opinion. Klonopin still doesn't work for anxiety/aggitation for me, I just take it for the seizure problem, and thats at 2 mg's a day.

Some people swear by it, that it helps anxiety, others agree with me. I know it is given to help stabalize moods too. My fiancee started taking .5 mg 2x a day just as a mood stabilizer. He says the Klonopin does nothing for him. He has been a little more pleasant to be around though since he has been taking it on a daily basis. His moods are much smoother. But, he still has to take Xanax for anxiety/panic/aggitation.

All just my opinion though. Hope I helped at least a little.

Are you taking Klonopin for anxiety?

Hope you find something that works for you.

Jodie

Maybe a dosage problem... I've been on Klonopin at .125mg to .5 mg and do really well. (almost a year). In general, .125mg three times a day. I use it for anxiety control with occ. really "fun" panic attacks. When I began taking it, all I really noticed was sedation. As I recall, it took a few weeks for me to get rid of "dragging" and realize I wasn't near as anxious as I was before. I titrate my dosing according to symptoms... with the above range. It's the only med I could tolerate and it mono-pharmotherapy for my problem. Good Luck in your quest for good management of yourself !!!

As with all of these meds, there's tremendous individual variation in effective dose. I do very well with 1 mg/day Klonopin for anxiety, but my pdoc considers this a very low dose and is surprised it works so well for me at this dose. I like K very much, so I'd recommend that you try more (under your doctor's supervision) before writing it off. Some people take several mg/day.

If it doesn't work (I'm assuming you're using it for anxiety), then you're bound to find something that will; it may just take some trial and error. But if you can, try increasing the dose and see what happens. I'm biased, but my experience is that Klonopin is an excellent med with minimal to no side effects.
