To missliz re feeling well

Posted by MelD on February 11, 2003, at 17:47:17

I would love to hear more from you about your experiences with feeling well. This has recently happened to me on Parnate and to my shock i got scared about it! After 20 years of living depressed, i am facing a restructuring of my whole way of living and thinking. Did you participate in any group that helped you with this? Thanks for any advice you can give.

Mel D,

Could you give me a little more info on your parnate experience. I think I will be starting this med in a couple of weeks and was very encouraged to read what you wrote. How long did it take to kick in? What dose are you on? Were the effects subtle like other meds or did you get a bang where you knew it was working? Any info appreciated.

Jack

My Parnate experience left me amazed. I can only speak for myself, of course, but it seemed like a miracle. I felt release from depression within 2 days after starting on only 10 mg and increasing to 20 mg the second day. I should mention that i have always responded to SSRis at low doses also, and that this was my first try with an MAOI. There was a downside, however, as i got extreme anxiety along with the depression relief. My pdoc reduced my dose back to 10mg and i used Klonopin to help me sleep. I havent felt so well in 20 years. We are so lucky if we find something that does the "magic" for us, and i hope so much that you have success. I resisted the MAOI for so long, being reluctant to deal with the diet restrictions, but have found the diet to be no hassle. Best of Luck to you! Oh! I nearly forgot to mention that i have already started to lose weight on Parnate. Like i said, for me it seems like a miracle.

How bad were they? What were they? How long did they last?

The anxiety was moderate to severe and the effect took a week or so to wear off after i stopped the Parnate completely. The reaction i had may have been caused, or at least aggravated by, the fact that i had only been off my SSRI (Serzone, 700 mg) for a week. I am easing back into the Parnate with the help of Klonopin, giving it a second trial because of the relief it gave me from depression.

I didn't realize you had come off of it. Are you still feeling better?

Hi Jack,
I'm curious how you came to your decision to go with Parnate over Nardil. It looks like you found a doctor willing to prescribe MAOI'S easily enough-- glad to hear it. I would love to hear how your Parnate trial goes. Good luck. Kara

I chose parnate over nardil because I am worried about the weight gain with nardil and because the sexual side effects are so much less on parnate. I would be willing to take sexual side effects and weight gain if it could relieve my depression, I just thought that I should give Parnate a chance because it doesn't have these.

I am a little worried about the anxiety side effects with parnate, though, and the insomnia thing. But now I am always tired so maybe it will activate me just enough.

No sexual side affects on Parnate and no weight gain, why haven't I tried this yet?? Does it really work that well?

i once was prescribed parnate. i took my first dose of 10mg and i felt irritable and jittery. like coming down from a caffeine buzz. i didn't take another dose of parnate after that. now i'm considering re-visiting it. did anyone else have this experience with parnate and if so, when does it go away? thanks.
