If used for depression only and is only med, tell doc to forget it. I can't present valid research but it is noted now more for its side effect of sedation and not seen as a good choice for only antidepressent. Some docs may use it to calm agitation on a temp baisis.

Dose varies widely.
These are experiences as sleep agent, which even as that is YUCKY.

50-100mgs for most- some as low ase 25.

I took 450 for almost a year and at times 600, just to doze off. Later, for no real reason, 100 would knock me out for 18 hours. Finally, I went off it because it began giving me a terribly dry mouth. I literally would consume 2-3 liters of water a night...which lead to getting up a lot to get rid of it...

Ask doc for other options in my humble opinion.

ALSO...not a joke. If you are a male and notice a prolonged erection without stimuli or it just plain wont go away, go to the ER right away. It is prob a condition called priapism and is not to be messed with -- almost 50% of those that present with it require surgery. This alone seems to make it not a good choice...lol

good luck,

Before I got stabilized with my current med combo, I tried trazadone for sleep during periods of agitated depression. 50-100 mg did make me sleepy, but the quality of sleep was low, and I generally woke up groggy and feeling "hung over". Definitely not one of my favorite meds, although my pdoc says it's a great sleep med for many people. I don't think anyone takes it seriously as a viable AD anymore, although Serzone is a slightly modified version, and works well for some.

I have been on Trazodone for nearly 3 years now and my pdoc prescribes it for me to help me sleep. I usually take 400mg and on that dose I average 3 to 6 hours of sleep a night. There was a period of time when I was taking 600mg a night for about 4 months because I was not sleeping at all. My pdoc chooses to use this over most other sleeping meds because it is hard to overdose on and I am consided a very high suicide risk patient. If not for the suicide risk I'm sure he'd be more willing to try other sleeping meds.

wow...tough call. There so mant things but if the doc is affaid to write them, what's to do. I was taking dose like that but finally felt almost comma like. How about mixing it with Ambian, I don't think that has much of a suicidal potential there.

Sleep will come someday. Make sure you get well enough for doc to help bt eventually write different things as his opinion of sucidel ideation decreases.

seems you are both stuck in a way.

good luck.

My pdoc won't let me take Ambian because it is only meant for short term use and it does pose a suicide risk. I have an extremely high tolerence to drugs I'm told partly because I was born a drug addicted. That is the reason why I take such a large dose of Trazodone and why I only sleep up to 6 hours on it. By the way 6 hours is the tops and that is with me waking up at least twice. In the last 2 1/2 years I've had 4 suicide attempts, over 25 hospital stays and am still considered unstable. I take any sleep I can get. Maybe one day I'll be able to sleep even just a solid 5 hours a night every night. For now I just plug away with my Trazodone at night, plus all the other meds and 4 hours of therapy a week and wait for a brighter day.

Funny doc my doc is starting to like ambian for long term for pple like us that just dont sleep. I am sorry about your circumstances. In a way , treatment wise, I may be lucky that I have never been truely suicidal and can get any med I want without fear on docs part. I know you here this and prob hate it like me but "hang in there".

we're here to hear,
