Back of neck swollen and sore

Posted by Joanie on January 30, 2003, at 10:38:36

My throat has been really sore mostly in the mornings for 4 or 5 days. Yesterday I woke up and my neck was very stiff and sore. It was painful to move my head back. My husband noticed last night that the back of my neck, or maybe it's the very top of my spine is somewhat swollen. It still is today after sleeping on a heating pad. I've had sore throats, etc. but never this. Also, my legs have been a little achey for a week or so. Any thoughts? Thanks.

It would help to know what med(s) you are on.

I think what your experiencing warrants going to the medical Dr. Anytime your neck is stiff and swollen it should be checked out.

Lexapro and Neck Soreness

I saw so many posts about Lexapro users having neck /shoulder stiffness and pain-- it was really unusual (I thought). I definitely had that too on Lexapro; I don't know why it would cause that specific symptom.

I tend to think that neck soreness and other soreness on anti-dep's is caused by the fact that they make you dehydrated. Lack of water will cause muscle aches, for sure. I find that when I don't drink enough water, my neck and upper back get pretty sore--this compounded by the fact that I sit at a computer every day and bend my neck.

Joanie, don't assume this sore neck & swelling on the back is the result of medication side effects. Go get a throat swab and/or blood test done. Too many times someone assumes their symptoms aren't worth checking out & they should've. Meningitis can cause a very stiff neck, so sore & stiff that it's very difficult, if not impossible, to touch your chin to your chest. Put your mind at ease & get it checked.

Yes! I'm so glad someone else posted this advice.
It CAN be meningitis....it could be not, but that'll kill you, and death is a bad way to find out you're wrong. :/

For what it is worth, since I started Effexor and Lexipro I have had neck and back problems. They have become exaerbated, and now I have a pinched nerve feeling in my neck. I definitely think my pain is medicine-related, but it is important to rule out an illness first.

Hmmmm Go see an MD,, sure. Bone Spurs can cause alot of pain in the neck.so can mis-allignments ,and old Whiplash injuries. They tend to heal wrong. Bone Spurs show up on Xrays, so you will know!. Good luck at the doctors!

I have had this happen a couple of times in the past, it ended up being strep throught. The back of my neck was even inflammed cause I had it so bad. If you've never had strep, or not that severe, the pain is horrible. I agree also that some there are forms of meningitis that casue cause these symptoms. But it could be something much simpler. Don't take chances, see a Dr. right away!!! Also, have you had a fever?

Hello! I have been on Lexapro for six days and have had a sore throat every morning for the last four days. Also, for the last two days the back of my neck has been sore and hurting. And the tirednesss and desire to sleep all the time is terrible. I want to give this medicine a fair chance but am beginning to wonder. I am less anxious and don't want to give up on something that might get better. Couldn't believe when I read about the soar throat and neck problems here.
Didn't think to connect the medicine and those problems. Any suggestions, anyone?? Maybe should have stayed on the Prozac, even though my doctor and I felt it was no longer working. Kinda bummed out tonight. Hope more people post and give their opinions. MaryZee

MaryZee,
Does the back of your neck hurt on both sides or just one side? Just curious. Mine only hurt on one side for about 5 days and it was swollen. I'm wondering if it was the Lexapro.

This message board is so cool and all of you are very kind. I did take the good advice given to me and Friday went to my Doctor. Turns out it was a really really bad sore throat (not strep), and the back of my neck was a swollen muscle. Go figure. Doc said I probably slept the wrong way. Weird. Anyway, I feel alot better now. Thanks for all the good advice!!

I am perfectly healthy! I am sorry for those who's back pain ended up being due to illness, but my back pain is definitely withdrawal from Effexor and tension from starting Lexapro.

Glad to hear you are feeling better!!! Nice to hear it wasn't strep!!!

Here, where I live (Indiana, and surrounding states) everyone is getting sick. From strep, flu, bronchitis, and severe colds. Schools are actually closing down in some places because so many children, and teachers are getting really sick. They figure if they close down for few days to a week, it will give time for the kids to get better, and the viruses to die down. Places of employment are also closing or had a 4 day weekend because of sickness!!! How crazy!!!! Anyway, thats why I suggested strep, because it is going around.

Take care

Jodie
