is there a replacement for risperdal?

Posted by babs on January 7, 2003, at 18:15:12

i must start this post by saying risperdal has worked wonders for me in terms of anxiety and obsessions as an augmentation to 60 mg of celexa. But I don't think I can take thye outrageous appetite and weight gain any more. I gained about 50 pounds on the stuff and am eating like a horse. I started taking adderall about 3 months ago and that helped with the appetite but even though I was eating less I still didn't lose any weight (and ever since I recovered from stomach flu my apetite has been huge!). I don't know what to do. I want to feel this good mentally (I need to right now- I'm going through an extremely stressful period) but I don't want to weigh 200 pounds anymore. Any suggestions?

Anxiety and obsessions are most commonly treated with antidepressants and benzodiazepines, which generally have less severe side effects than AP's.

If you need an AP, maybe you could try Geodon or Abilify--both are in the same class as Risperdal and are associated with minimal weight gain. I take Geodon for a thought disorder and have experienced no weight gain. I hope you find something that works and has a better side effect profile--good luck.

My doctor did not advise me of any withdrawal and I did not experience any. I was on it for about a year.

I switched from risperdal to zyprexa without any problems. My psychiatrist and I overlapped the coming of risperdal and the coming on zyprexa.
YMMV

Good Luck,
