Nardil : Med to fight insomnia side-effect?

Posted by lonesomeloser on January 2, 2003, at 15:04:48

Hi people,

I have been browsing here on Dr. Bobs (thanks Doc)
forum for many months.

I suffer from Depression, Dysthymia, Social Phobia, and Anxiety. I have tried most all the SSRI meds and Tricyclics (my condition is over 20 years old now) with little avail and loads of side-effects.

The only med that ever seemed to help much was Nardil, but I had major trouble sleeping on this medication.

Question: Which medication might be best for reliving this sleeplessness?

Last time I was on Xanax, but it didnt really help that much. I plan to ask my pdoc to prescribe Nardil again, but I want to know in advance what medications anyone else has tried with Nardil vs the sleeplessness problem.

Thanks for any help in advance.

How long did you have the insomnia?

It never went away. The Xanax was the only reason I got any sleep at all, but I felt more "normal" on Nardil then anything else I have used.

I wish I could be Trazadone makes me feel like a Zombie and doesnt help sleep. Sonata might work.
All the posts I have read indicate that this insomnia is a common side effect of Nardil.

Yes I think it is somewhat common, I experienced it at first but it went away after about a week.... Maybe you should ask your doc

The very first night I took Nardil I couldn't sleep. Took some valium. 5mg. After that no probs. around 3 weeks into treatment started waking in middle of night (due to Nardil supression of REM sleep I'd assume) Hardly any probs getting back to sleep, though.

I'd try to find a way to use Nardil minus the insomnia. Maybe take the full dose early morning, assuming u havent already tried this.

Sometimes a class of drugs known as "hypnotics" or "sleeping pills" will help with "sleeplessness".

Where would this board be without my insight =)

Take care, and hope you can go to sleep sometime.
