cure for Zyprexa Sedation

Posted by cybercafe on December 24, 2002, at 13:59:32

i find i am sleeping way too much on zyprexa. like i can go for 10-12 hours at a time.

how have you dealt with this? do any antidepressants help?

i remember when i was on Parnate and zyprexa i would get a regular 7 or 8 hours of sleep and be motivated to do things ...

maybe i should be looking for a stimulant or antidepressant to add... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Move to Seroquel or Geodon.

Why did you go off Parnate with Zyprexa?

all of my mood disorders resolved.. i still couldn't concentrate..
realized i suffered from ADD ... and generally stimulants arent to be combined
with MAOIs

it was a wonderful combination, while it lasted

i don't know what AD to go on now, moclobemide? wellbutrin?

I hear geodon can make you tiered. And it is taken 2 times a day to make you sleep through the day. That's why I wouldn't take it.

I take Celexa, and this helps make it easyer to get up in the morning than without. Read side-effects, find one with sleeplessness.

Several Possibilities:

-Try Geodon. I went from 12hours of sleep a night on Zyprexa 20mg to 7-9hours of sleep on Geodon 80mg.

-Try Wellbutrin. If Parnate helped you sleep less than Wellbutrin might too because both are activating ADs.

-Try Provigil. It can help counteract sleepiness. It is much better than using stimulants like Ritalin or Adderall because these are indiscriminate dopamine agonists. That means they have a huge range of effects, while Provigil is very selective at helping you sleep less. Ritalin or Adderall can actually counteract the good effects of an antipsychotic.

Just my 2 cents

is it safe to combine wellbutrin with stimulants? because they both work on Norepenephrine/dopamine... i would worry about a seizure

i could use the extra anti-ADD effects of ritalin/adderall, but dont they make you sleepy when they wear off in the evening?

i'm taking the anti-psychotic for mood stabilizing, not anti-psychotic, effects

my feeling has been that large doses of soft drinks stimulate me but also make me calm...
others have also said that stimulants help stabilize their moods ...

i'm hoping for the same... your argument makes sense from a theoretical point of view, but can you point me to any info that discusses mood stability and combining antipsychotics with ADD-meds?

much appreciated

You mention mood stability. Are you a bipolar or have some bipolar traits? What is your current medical regimen?

I've never used an ADD-stimulant so I don't have any personal info to give you. I think the falloff in plasma levels in the evening and at night is desirable because the stimulants can cause insomnia. That's why they give ADD-kids their last dose of meds during school at 12pm, so by nightfall they are no longer as stimulated.

If you realy want to get rid of sedated sleepiness I suggest Abilify, garantee of only 7-8 hours a night. Only if you want rid of Zyprexa though.
