Does Wellbutrin actually treat you DEPRESSION?

Posted by Ricardo on December 17, 2002, at 6:36:01

Hi from Brazil!

I've been on Wellbutrin for 2 weeks, after a not so happy experience on Paxil. I can say lots of bad things about Paxil: how it destroyed my sexual life, how I couldn't even think of exercising, how I had to take long naps twice a day... But there's one thing about it that I can deny: it did treat my depression. My question is: OK, Wellbutrin is great at enhancing one's sexual life, it'll help you shed weight, but... what about your *depression*, will it tackle it as effectively as an SSRI?

Thanks a lot!
Ricardo

It didn't for me, but it does for other people...
it's all very individual. I have found that the
SSRI's work best for my depression. Wellbutrin did
not work for my depression at all really. Other
people have found it to be a great antidepressant. I guess
you'll just have to give it some time and wait and see.

It does for some.
I think it treats the symptoms of depression
rather than mood. Some people don't have as
much sad mood as they do lack of energy, motivation, sex drive, stammina etc.

For me, I had all these things. I had
energy drive stammina, but I just was so
sad I had no reason to do anything. All
I could do was cry continuously. Sometimes
I was too sad to cry, I sounds weird, but
I remember just sitting and waiting to be
able to cry.

Some people say they're depressee but it
is nothing like this.
It is really a trial and error thing.

I had a very similar response with paxil, emotionally I felt wonderful but I had no sex drive and I gained 25 pounds (and I'm very physically active). So I switched to wellbutrin sr (150mg 2x a day) but that dose made me very agitated so I'm on 100mg 2x a day now. The only complaint I would have is my moods are not as stable as they were with a SSRI. I've been thinking of trying an SSRI with the wellbutrin. I hope it works for you, give it 4-6 weeks to see how you do. Good luck!

Hey Guys!

Thanks a lot for replying to my post. Maybe it's still a symptom of my chronic depression, but I think I still feel like nobody likes me well enough to reply to my posts! Just kidding... I think the reason for my asking this questions is that I would really like to *stay* on Wellbutrin, which, of course, will only happen if it does work! Anyway, I've just checked Wellbutrin's official web site, and there I've found some graphics comparing its efficacy to Zoloft's. Has anyone seen those? Actually, according to those numbers, Wellbutrin compares very positively to Zoloft! (Why Zolof and not Paxil, I wonder... Just kidding...) Well, once again, thanks a lot and good luck to everybody!

Ric
