The best ADs for Panic that I've tried are either Paxil or Effexor.

>A word of caution...after having panic attacks off and on for 20 years I finally mentioned it to my Dr. who prescribed Paxil. Big mistake. After about 3 weeks on 20mg I experienced what the psychiatrist I ended up seeing recognized as a serotonin storm...imagine your worst panic attack ever and multiply it by 10000. Six months later I still have horrible daily anxiety (which I never had before) kept at bay only by Xanax. Paxil can be great for lots of folks but for many with panic disorder it can create a monster.

Paxil made my panic attacks worse, too. Perhaps you should try Celexa since it is supposed to affect only serotonin. Especially if you feel your anxiety is accompanied by a constant "adrenaline rush".

> I've been reluctant to try any other antidepressants after the Paxil experience, but several others have suggested Celexa..are you taking it? Your comment about the adrenalin rush was right on target. My anxiety seems purely physical, not mental, if that makes sense. Xanax takes the edge off, but the underlying "hum" for lack of a better term is still there. Anyone know what I mean?

I know what you mean. Celexa may be worth a try. I used to take it and found it relieves anxiety without causing an unnecessary increase in the activity of other neurotransmitters, though it has a different effect on each individual.
Do you also suffer from symptoms of depression or mainly from anxiety? Have you ever tried a beta blocker? Just a thought...

>My main problem is anxiety, though I have some episodes of depression that I think are mainly due to frustration about the anxiety...I mentioned the beta-blocker to my primary care doc and she vetoed it without even discussing it. I guess I should ask my psych. about it. My sister takes a beta blocker for migraine prevention and has noticed a definite calming effect. Maybe it's worth a try. I'd prefer that over another antidepressant if possible after the paxil fiasco. Thanks for the advice.

Good luck (nm)
