LIGHT BOXES SOS! SOS!

Posted by Anna P. on December 5, 2002, at 13:51:07

I need to order the light box ASAP. I'm getting SAD, and I want to order it tomorrow. Is there anything cheaper and good brand than Apollo that charges about $350.00?

I like Northern Light Technologies Sadelite model. It is cheaper, but you should also consider features. I think the Sadelite is both cheap and effective.

A word of caution....light therapy for SAD is better as a preventative than as a treatment. It helps, but it is more effective if you start early (some suggest around the equinox in September).

I agree with Larry about the SADelite being the cheapest & one of the best even if it isn't very aesthetically pleasing. I've have had my SADelite for 4 years now. The last two years has seen it on almost every day for much of the late afternoon & evening as my cats love to camp under the fake "sun". Even with using it so much, I've not had to replace the bulbs yet!

You may find the recommended distance of 18 inches (I think) too far away. I use it at only 8 inches away & for 30-45 minutes a time. The recommended 20 minutes isn't enough to help me.

Hi- I would also suggest two other sites.
www.sadlight.com
This site lets you compare the different lights from different manufacturers.

www.alaskanorthernlights.com
I bought one of their boxes called the North Star 10,000 locally for about $300.I am very happy with it. If you buy it from their website it is only around $200.

Thought I'd chime in on the light-box theme, as I've been thinking of grabbing one for quite some time now.I usually crumble after a few weeks of dark, overcast and rainy weather.Trouble is, I'm not convinced it's the light thing- I think with me its the atmospheric changes in air-pressure, which seem to affect my brain (like a crushing sensation) in advance of overcast weather.I was thinking of getting one of those old-fashioned bronze deep-sea diving helmets to wear while I sit gazing into my new light-box all evening....if it works, maybe I'll fix a high intensity light bulb inside the helmet, and patent it....

I use a Dawn Simulator that seems to help. They run about $100.00. You can see some at www.home-environment.com, or www.sadlight.com . I use the Bio Bright SunRise clock.
