Going off Remeron

Posted by Halfway on October 25, 2002, at 16:40:52

Does Remeron need to be 'phased out' like many other ADs? Or will cold turkey be bearable.

I've only been on it 2.5 weeks. Bloated up 15 pounds of water weight, even with restricted diet. Plus, makes me feel like I took 10 Benadryls (drowsy and dumb). No thanks.

Please share experiences.

I found a positive mood-elevating "rebound" effect from stopping Remeron and considered taking it only once a week at a high dose and then letting it washout through the week so I could think and function. It has nearly a 40-hr. half-life, so it might not be a big deal, unless it was enabling you to sleep and to stop panic attacks or something like that.

Of all the ADs I've been on, Remeron caused the least amount of rebound junk effects. If you've only been on it 3 weeks or so, going off will be unpleasant for another 3 weeks but not disabling. Better than dragging it out. Extra calcium, magnesium and vitamin C and B's - heck, a good mutli-vitamin and lotsa water will help to ease things. Good luck. I still haven't lost the extra 30 pounds I packed on.
