Cinnimon must be psychoactive

Posted by linkadge on September 25, 2002, at 14:31:16

I am not a druggy but it seems to me that
cinnimon must be some sort of MAO. A coupple
of days ago I was deeply breathing in the
aroma of a cinnimon spice jar (I love the
smell) and had some distinctive changes
in mental status. I might even have been borderline snorting the spice. It was either cinnimon or Rosemary, that provoked the change.

I am not joking. Can somebody confirm
what I am saying ?

It's the little understood science behind sensible aromatherapy that different volatile compounds can affect moods. Just as different medications do not always have the same effect on all individuals, the natural compounds found in many aromatic plants affect people differently.

Cinnamon has literally hundreds of active compounds that can affect our body depending on how much we inhale. For example, one compound, myristicin, can inhibit cyclooxygenase (Cox-2 enzyme), much like Cox-2 inhibitors, a new class of NSAIDs. There's another compound in cinnamon that can mildly inhibit the MAO enzymatic pathways causing a bit of a high if enough is inhaled.

So, no, you didn't imagine the effect. You may be more sensitive to it, or snorted a larger amount than you realized. But considering the number of compounds in cinnamon, trying to use it to improve depression isn't the best use of it.

Wierdly enough I have felt much better for two days and the only difference in my routine was eating ice cream with cinammon in it. I tried ice cream alone with no results , maybe you have something there!

Nutmeg is as well according to William Burroughs in The Naked Lunch. Not recommended reading and not a recommended drug (even by him) as it gives a terrible hangover apparently

Almost all spices have the potential to be psychoactive.
