Need *major* helpPlease Effexor Sexual Dysfunction

Posted by jay on September 13, 2002, at 13:05:36

Well, I am on my about 5 year Effexor use 'anniversary', and yes it is a good antidepressant. But, it has ruined my sex drive, and my ability to perform. A review of the literature indicates that Welbutrin and Trazadone are both failures in the area of reducing SRI/SNRI induced sexual dysfunction. The literature seems to only indicate Viagra as the *consistent* method for both sexual function, and what men experience as nocturnal erections. (Which I have also greatly lacked since starting antidepressants.) My only real problem with Viagra is cost..as I don't have insurance.

So, I am willing to try Ginkgo, YET again. I stopped it last due to major anxiety increase. But, this time I will just have to stick with it. The studies (from Medline) seem to show a fairly good rate of success with regular use.

If anybody has any comments on *what works* for them, PLEASE, give us some information. I (and any others out there with the problem) would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Jay

Jay
Can you decrease the Effexor dose?
You could try Remeron for your anti-dep.
Remeron doesn't have the sexual side effect problem.
Maybe you could take the Remeron IN PLACE OF the Effexor OR add Remeron and thereby take much less Effexor.
This would depend on the Remeron being effective for you (I just started taking Remeron at higher doses and don't know if it will be an effective anti-dep. for me yet or not).

Hope you can get a handle on the dreaded side effect. I have been on effexor for 3 years, 175mg previously, but now I'm back down to 75mg. Even at the higher dose, though, 100mg of Wellbutrin has taken the sexual dysfunction away, and kept it away. Sorry to hear it doesn't work for you.

I did find a link that may be useful to you.... http://www.medhelp.org/forums/mentalhealth/messages/30957a.html ......hope it helps....good luck finding what works!

Jay,

I think that most SSRI's and drugs that inhibit reuptake of serotonin lower testosterone levels. You might have your doc test you for low testosterone.

Also, here's a 'home remedy' that I've posted here before so I hope it's alright if I repost it. Maybe I should just post the link but here goes.

Try a combination of three or four of the following natural remedies. I've listed them in my own order of preference. This worked for me much better than Viagra, or any other prescription that I've tried.

- Maca (Lepidium meyenii,
- Potency Wood (Muira puama),
- Epimedium Sagitatum extract
- Avena Sativa extract,
- Yohimbe extract (Pausinystalia yohimba)(bark), (yohimbe may cause nerviousnes - probably not good for people with GAD or depression - IMO. I don't use it myself so I don't think that it is essential in the mix.)
- L-Arginine,
- Zinc (or ZMA)
- Tribulus Terresteris extract,

Also: low dose selegiline (5mg or less). Selegiline is prescription only. Your Dr. can tell you if it is compatible with the drugs that you are on. Selegiline has been shown to increase testosterone levels.

You can find all of these (except selegiline) at:

https://www2.acadia.net/cgi-bin/BAC/web_store.cgi

I like this site because it sells in bulk which makes the products much cheaper. The downside is that you have to cap the products yourself because if you take them without capping them most of them taste toooo! nasty.

I've went from one extreme to the other when using some of these, inorgasmia to premature ejaculation. It will also increase libedo and sensation. I don't know if these supplements will work as well for women but most likely they will.

Vince
