Hi I'm on a cocktail of med's 15mg remeron, 10mg Zyprexa, 4mg Clonazepam, 225mg Effexor and 80mg Prozac. I think the Zyprexa is really clouding my mind and making me lethargic, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with another a typical antipsychotic, not making them so tired and loggy - such ziprasidone or quetiapine. A professor from Stanford responded to one of my posts and said ziprasidone didn't cause drowsyness, but I've read a lot to the contrary - anybody have any experience with this? Thanks so much,

Hi Ben,
I've taken Geodon (ziprasidone) and like it much better than Zyprexa when it comes to fatigue, etc. It didn't make me drowsy at all, whereas Zyprexa knocked me out at first and later at best turned me into a zombie. Geodon also had a noticeable anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effect for me.

I agree. I am on 150mg Effexor and 10 mg of Zyprexa. I am a fitness buff and workout 4 times a week. But lately just can't find the energy to workout. The worst part is waking up in the morning; I have a really hard time getting out of bed. I am bi-polar so it seems to help my mood, but I do feel lethargic.

Thanks Jon, in true form, I'll pursue Ziprasidone with Kamikaze/OC vigour haha, It's not available in Canada except through the special access program, however, pfizer who produces the drug, I found out, doesn't stock it at all in Canada. Thanks againBen

Oh, I'm sorry, I guess you probably read the previous posting of the gentleman that didn't experience fatigue on Ziprasidone but did on Zyprexa. I'll pursue the drug, (Ziprasidone) and post my experience, although it may be tricky to get because it's not approved here in Canada -

For the first month or so zyprexa did make me tired, but after that it seemed somewhat activating during the day while still helping me sleep. It was also the best augmentation Ive had with any antidepressant and gave me the ability to taper down my klonopin a good amount, which I think is the main benefit over geodon, which can cause agitation, insomnia, etc. Zyprexa also helped me to think clearly after a while, but I bet so would geodon although that statement is not based on experience. Geodon does sound like a very promising med, so Im not saying dont try it, but dont give up on zyprexa too early (I dont know how long youve been taking it).

My last pdoc consulted an expert on Geodon who had done research on the drug from NYC and his advice was to push the dose if it doesn't control the agitation, improve mood, stabilize, etc. He said people don't use the drug at high enough doseages. In theory, I suppose that may increase the risk of TD, but then the result of untreated mental illness is a certainty. Just thought I'd mention this for anyone who might benefit from it...

I gave Zyprexa a short try and found it to be too mind altering to tolerate. I felt like I was dulled in all aspects of the life experience. Maybe this is because I am the creative type. This may sound kind of paranoid but, it sort of felt like my mind was being controlled.

You just have to get used to it. All the effects take a while, long while, but when you get over it you will be thankful. I didn't like Zyprexa, but it was geting hard to find a good one, this turned out to be best for me.
Once you get used to the mind control, you'll be happy... then you might be able to come off it.
Take your medicine!!! When you come off it you may have better thoughts.

I take seroquel (quetiapine) at 12.5 mg in the evenings. I found 25 mg to be too sedating, and I had trouble getting out of bed in the morning. Halving the dose has improved my situation well. Never tried any of the other atypical antipsychotics, so I can't comment on those.
