Cyclothymia Thought Blocking Word Finding

Posted by david1717 on September 4, 2002, at 23:10:46

Hi Gang:

Sorry to post a non-pharmaceutical question here, but I have received some very insightful and helpful comments on this side. Quick question, Cyclothymia and the occurrence of thought blocking and word finding. I go through this ordeal (I have it now so please bear with my language skills)
About once a month for a 2 or 3 day period. Of course, its incredibly disruptive. I find that analogies are impossible to understand, I cannot spell, I don’t understand sentence syntax nor can I form a proper sentence. For instance, in using business email, I have been recently spelling hello as “hellow.” It looks right to me as I am currently viewing it but intellectually I know its wrong. I mean I went to Law School and I know I can spell hello. I am having an incredulously hard time getting through this email. Must have made 35 corrections to this point. So before I can’t write at all…here is what I feel during these periods. I can’t summon my thoughts, I can’t find words or spell or remember phone numbers that I have known for years, everything becomes so confusing and I become forgetful and misplace items and forget conversations. Also, at times but its rare there is an intermittent (Took me about 30 seconds to get that word, I kept writing intimate, looked right but I knew it was wrong) sense of depersonalization. I understand reality but its like looking through colored glass…you can still see but things are a little bit distorted. Like having a few drinks.

I just want to hear someone else who is cyclothemic say they have been through the same thing. I would greatly appreciate any similar experiences so I can feel like this is normal, at least for the clclothemic. Please remember that this has happened my whole life (so its not organic or drugs) because when the cycle shifts, I’ll be able to read at an accelerated rate, think and understand in profound clarity, write in poetic verse or legalese, remember new numbers without writing them down…etc.

Sorry about the poor writing, Thanks for listening,..

David

I'm cyclothymic...I've had something similar, although
maybe not as severe...I've always wondered if it was
ADD...have you thought about that? Is it during your up
or down periods that you have the problems?
(I have the spelling words backwards even though I know how
they're spelled, or seeing words spelled in ways they're not really
spelled and doing a double take...)

I have it, but only since I've been on medication. On the other hand, I didn't have noticeable mood cycles until a Wellbutrin inspired agitated hypomania. So who can tell...

I've always had problems with word recall. It's forced me to learn a lot of synonyms! :) I'm not sure what it's symptomatic of. Medications definitely can induce this as well or at least make it worse. I'm in the bipolar spectrum (or at least my doctor says so)... maybe this is a bipolar thing. I may have ADD as well so maybe that's what we all have and why we experience this type of thing. Maybe we all have learning disabilities. I don't know, but you're not alone.

Hey thanks for the support, People

Roo, By the way, I only have this "thought blocking" or "word finding" during a down cycle...and the downs don't ever reach a point of depression. But God, never on the upswing. On the upswing I am like an agitated thesaurus looking to play a game of "Can you top this!" I just wanted someone to say "hey, this happens to me too."

Thanks so much for you responses!

Warmests personal regards,

David
