Ross, I'm so glad to hear you're doing good on Nardil despite the side-effect. Can't you bring this up with your doctor & ask him for some Viagra samples? I saw on a US TV station, a commercial advertising Viagra & how you could get free samples to see if it's 'right' for you.

Ross,

I've been on 45 mgs of nardil for about 11 years. It's still working great, but lately the anorgasmia is taking its toll. Have you been able to find a solution?

I was on Nardil years ago for about a year before switching at that time to Parnate. I can't remember the name of the drug, but my pdoc prescribed something that allowed my muscles to contract and thus releived the anorgasmia %100. The Nardil causes a lack of muscle tension that creates problems with sexuality and elimination.

Wouldn't this also indicate Viagra? My last 2 pdocs have reported success in prescribing Viagra for SD caused by ADs (including MAOIs). I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone, though :(

I wouldn't know about Viagra as I am a woman. There has been no development of any drug to help women with those issues unfortunately.

I tried bethanacol while on Nardil -- didn't do a thing. What you need is an indiscriminate alpha-blocker like phenoxybenzamine at very low doses -- and just try talking a doc into that!

Upon what do you base your recommendation? Have you used an alpha blocker to relieve anorgasmia?

Yes.

Dear Ross,

The following reflects my own experience with Nardil and MAOIs in general.

Wait 4 (range 2-6 months) before evaluating your state of anorgasmia. 4 weeks is not nearly enough time to reach any conclusions.

Nardil does not produce persistent (intractable) anorgasmia to the same degree as the SSRI antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, and Celexa).

Encourage the orgasmic pathways to begin to compensate and reregulate themselves by bringing yourself to orgasm as many times as you can. Obviously, you might not reach orgasm at this in time, but persistent attempts should yield orgasms at some point. From the very first orgasm achieved, it should become easier and easier to attain.

Use every means at your disposal to have sex as often as possible. Your pleasurable efforts should bear fruit. I recommend that you masturbate often using whichever fantasies you find the most erotic.

Like Nike says, "Just do it". Your persistence and patience should pay off. If Nardil is one of the few antidepressants that works well for you, I don't believe you have any better choice.

Good luck and happy trails...

- Scott

Dear Scott.

So nice to hear from you again.

As you know I use venlafaxin 300 mg + litium + lamictal.

My mood is good. I still have sexuall side effect. anorgasm + decresed desired. Anorgasm is the most painfull symptom.

Have tried buspirone, amantadine, nefazodone. The only meds that works was Mirtazapin. Unfortunately, I have to stopped it because of reccurent infection.

Any idea? except stimulantia, like ritalina, because, no doctors will used it for sexuall dysfunction, only ADHD.( Very conservative in my country)

Any tips ?

Take care, Scott

Sincerely

Petters

Wait 6 months - sounds like your life will be improving regardless of imparied ejaculation to me anyway (sorry just being frank) - and you will only do worse with SSRI's - the sexual side effects you're getting have more to do with your genetics than anything - as you will find most other a/d's worse (yes Parnate, Wellbutrin, have less - but will not help you much either)...

After 6 months - still troubled? Try lowering Nardil down, and augment appropriately.

Good luck if you want to you will succeed...

ross, I have been taking Nardil for 25 years and
have had anorgasmia the whole time. Both my doctor

was too dangerous to even consider. Let me know if
you find a solution. Thanks, timidly @ bigfoot . com

25 years of anorgasmia? Wow I couldn't go that long.. From what I hear the ability to orgasm usually returns in 6-8 weeks but 120mg is a high dose.

My choices are sex and anorgasmia or no sex. When I have decreased or stopped the Nardil the anorgasmia went away, but I had no interest or desire, and also no life. With the Nardil I have interest, desire, a life, and anorgasmia. The decision makes itself. Every time a new AD med becomes available I've tried it hoping for equivalent results with fewer side effects. Haven't found one yet. Maybe the next one will do it. The hope helps keep me going.

I started Nardil four months ago (60mg) and have seen the best sustained response in the 12 years that I have had depression (better than moclobemide). However, a few disconcerting side-effects have popped up at this therapeutic dose; namely hypotension upon rising quickly (hardly happens anymore), profound sleepiness between 5 and 8 pm, and the most frustrating, especially since my libido hasn't been this good since my early twenties: anorgasmia.

I've tinkered with herbal products by using information gleaned from the Internet, and this is what I have found for male sexual function:

1. Tribulus terrestris increases testosterone.

2. Avena sativa and Stinging nettle free bound
testosterone, making it biochemicaly active.

3. Saw palmetto prevents formation of DHT, the
" bad" form of testosterone, which may cause
adult acne, prostate enlargement and possibly
male patttern baldness. Use instead of
Tribulus as testosterone levels may be high
enough.

4. Pygeum africanum reduces prolactin levels thus
increasing libido.

5. Blue cohosh tincture (20:1) raises oxytocin
levels thus increasing intensity of orgasm.
CAUTION: will increase blood pressure at
regular dosage. Start very low, taking after
full meal and increase dosage slowly over time.

6. Ginsana® brand ginseng (100mg) with extract
G115 will increase libido.

7. Anyone taking an MAOI, such as nardil should
supplement with vitamin B6 (200mg total per
day) as this nutrient is destroyed by the drug
and is very important in nerve function.

Use only products that are standardized for active compounds and have an expiry date. Take a one week " break " after 4-5 weeks of usage (especially ginseng) to avoid tolerance to this stimulation. My capacity for orgasm returned with a bang 3 weeks after starting this herbal protocol. However, it may have returned on its own given anecdotal evidence that it usually returns after a few months at therapeutic dosage of nardil.

Hi

I also appear to have anorgasmia. I am currently on 30mg, reduced from 45mg 2 1/2 weeks ago. I am feeling pretty desperate about it now. I have definitely not lost any libido, and am in a new, very lovely relationship. It is so frustrating!! As a female, I have found very little advise out there for phenelzine-induced anorgasmia......can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks

Achoo

Warmly,

If you read my May 8th, 2003 post you'll notice what I have tried mostly affects natural bioactive testosterone levels. Since testosterone in females also affects libido ( older women are often prescribed it for this reason) I don't see a problem trying Tribulus terrestris or Avena sativa (oat straw) to bump up your T levels WITHING THE NORMAL RANGE FOR FEMALES ( about 2-5 % of normal range for men )also. These herbals act indirectly as opposed to taking exogenous testosterone.
As others have noted, orgasm will return after several weeks or months on its own ( in my case, 6 weeks after therapeutic dose was reached).

I hope this helps!

Paul

I take 90mg. and don't have problems with it like the old Nardil. The new Nardil only works about 50% as well though. A few years ago I once took 3 Viagra's and it didn't work, everything just looked blue. To me it is the worst side-effect of Nardil. My SAD and Dysthemia dissapears and I will just walk up and talk to a woman something unheard of before I began taking the old Nardil. Then I realize that if a relationship starts I'll have ED. I have never found and answer to this and don't believe one exists unless a ED med. comes out that effects the limbic area of the brain.
