U.S. release of Duloxetine,Milnacipram,Gepirone?

Posted by 3 Beer Effect on August 13, 2002, at 9:44:02

Does anyone have any info on when the "new" SNRIs 'duloxetine' by Eli-Lilly & 'milnacipram' by ? are going to be released?

Duloxetine was discovered quite a few years ago, but still hasn't received FDA approval for release/sale because the FDA had problems once again with Eli-Lilly's Indianapolis manufacturing plant. I couldn't find any info on a release date, but their non-addictive (noradrenergic) ADHD med Atomoxetine is being delayed until atleast Spring 2003 because the next FDA inspection of that (Indianapolis) plant isn't until early 2003. I was going to buy stock in Eli-Lilly since their product pipeline includes the "next" Prozac & Ritalin- (duloxetine & atomoxetine, & also a longer acting Viagra like medicine)- In other words, possible blockbuster drugs. But they keep delaying & delaying- I don't know if its Eli-Lilly's fault or the FDA just being slow, so their stock price is going down the tubes right along with their Prozac sales (now available in generic).

What about milnacipram? Who makes this drug, & it appears to be similar to duloxetine (both SNRIs but no dopamine:( but how come you never hear much about it? When is it going to be released in the US?

Its a shame its taking so long for these drugs to be released. The current repertoire of anti-depressants & anti-anxiety meds in the U.S. is lousy= SSRIs with lots of side effects, newer ADs (Effexor XR, Remeron, Serzone) with even MORE side effects, Wellbutrin SR-#3 for hospital emergency room admissions for seizures in non-epileptics (#1=cocaine,#2=benzo withdrawl).

For anxiety the only but very controversial choice are the benzos which make you 10% dumber, & unlike the ancient but more effective medication alcohol (which is stimulatory at 2 drinks or less), with benzos there is little or no mood elevation, just a dull, blah feeling & often eventual depression especially at high doses. I take 4 mg/day of Klonopin, & if I don't take them with a high ADD dose of Dexedrine, I get a severe case of the "blahs"- Why anyone would want to abuse benzos is beyond my comprehension!? I'm waiting for Gepirone ER to come out to get off the mind-dulling Klonopin, but who knows when that will be. I'm tempted to start partying on the weekends again to cure (temporarily) my social phobia/depression, but by the time the FDA approves Gepirone ER (an improved longer acting Buspar-like drug) i'd probably be a bad drunk.

Thanks for any info,
3 Beers

Hi...

My pdoc mentioned duloxetine this morning and exactly the problem you mentioned. he said med is ready to go, but the manufacturing plant is the issue and it could be up to a year. Frustrating because he said (after attending a conference) that it looks good. He said it's good for pain control, no weight gain and as far as sexual side effects which is my big issue... they report it in men but not women. I find this hard to believe, but... I can hope.
