how to stop hyper anxiety?

Posted by alex01 on August 10, 2002, at 22:15:21

I think it's hyper anxiety or at least overstimulation of some kind.

I had always had an anxiety problem and have a very sensitive system when it comes to medication, I can use a small grain or somethings like ssris, beta-blockers and get a big reaction.

Anyway I took a grain of dexamphetamine, once, a year ago and have had an enormous over stimulation problem ever since, it was like an enormous panic attack but very physical, my eyesight was affected and things seemed to sway a bit, it was very firghtening. It used to come several times a day in a big burst and last a fwe hours and then go, but over the past year it has levelled out such that it is less but more constant.

I am on 750mg of lithium which helps to hold it back, and beta-blockers also help. but i still get big muscle tension in my head (only in my head the rest of my body is ok) this might be why my eyesight goes funny?

It does seem to be linked to anxiety, ie as a trigger, but often sets off by itself, my guess is that the dex taught my brain how to really get overstimulated/anxious and it has sort of got stuck.

Any ideas re what this is (no psych doc's have any ideas so far they are just trying to control symptoms with lith and bbs). Any similar stories of this happening around?

Any advice appreciated

There are some links between anxiety disorders and thyroid malfunction. If you are low in folic acid because your thyroid gland is enlarged and not working properly, it affects your lymphatic system, that controls the fluids in your body. The fluids increase and build pressure through your neck and head, which causes pain. Usually if the thyroid is underactive you have decreased appetite too. I know it is something that pychiatrists don't normally check for, but it does cause a lot of trouble mentally. Hope its at least educating, if not helpful info. Anxiety is something I know well. Hang in there. One other thing...meditation works wonders. Really. It calms you done, centers you. I also sometimes just go running around town. Catharsis.

Hi,

The one thing I can think of which probably is off-the-wall, is migraines. This spring I took two doses of Adderall at the same time, and had a series of migraines start: visual disturbance and things just being off, a funny sense of pressure in my head (but NO headache), some numbness on my scalp, a little nauseated or queasy. Not all the symptoms every time. It made me anxious to have such a weird feeling. The eye thing took a really long time to improve (months) and a slight effect may be permanent. I went to a neuro-ophthamologist who said this was migraine. My regular doctor was suprised as I had no actual pain, but apparently migraines can occur without pain. Wimpy pills like ibuprofen and aspirin didn't help at all.

If it was migraine then a migraine-preventative would most likely help. Usually serotonin altering meds. Maybe try to get an appointment with a doc who could rule out migraine (an ophthalmologist or neurologist).

Just a thought. -- kate
