creeping feeling

Posted by mopey on July 26, 2002, at 19:27:10

Hi! This probably sounds weird, but lately I've had a creeping feeling on my face and legs.

On my face it starts from my scalp and "trickles" down one side of my face -- has happened on each side of my face on separate occasions.

I also feel the same sensation on my legs from time to time.

My doc thinks it might be to do with hyperventilation, since I do get panic attacks.
However, I don't see any link between the feeling and the panic attacks.

Anyone experienced this?

(I haven't been on meds since Celexa a few months ago...)

Thanks

Hi Mopey

Is it like ants creeping on your skin? Your description reminds me of formication:

(Hope the link works.)

This issue is seen in anxiety. Do some searches
on panic and see if you can find any info on it.

Hi Mopey

Sorry; only know that it is a common symptom in perimenopause. Don't know what other else may cause it. Others here may know.

best wishes,

My feeling on this subject is that it involves substance P. Your statement that you have panic attacks makes me even more convinced that it might have something to do with substance P. I could be wrong, but the logical connections seem to make sense in my mind. Note that substance P antagonists seem to exhibit about 50% efficacy; I think that they'll be excellent add-ons to anti-anxiety or depression therapy rather than as a treatment option on their own.

I to have had this feeling but on my scalp. This gets me worried because then I think it's lice or something like that.

Thanks for the link, Shawn. I'll look into this further. Will report back anything else I discover.

I should mention that some anticholinergic drugs can give you that exact feeling as well (I only know this from experience).

I have panic disorder and agoraphobia. I have not been able to take the SSRI's because that's exactly what it does to me - that creepy feeling of icy ants crawling down or up your head and up your legs - it increases my anxiety and panic! It always freaks me out and then I end up worse than before. I suspect you're having anxiety/panic symptoms. Feeling this symptom and becoming frightened of it is what panic is. If you can feel this and just notice it as a symptom without "reacting" to it and just let it happen then you're ahead of the game. Don't let it progress to the point of beginning a cycle of symptoms - fear - anxiety - more symptoms - more fear etc. because then you join my ranks!
