Totally Fed Up W/Medical Professionals

Posted by ensoul on July 15, 2002, at 22:46:07

oh boy, get to see the Nurse Practioner that called me a liar, in the am
seems my family doctor is out, no one is saying why or if she'll be back : (

been having back pain for over a month now and nothings helped (heat, ointments, ice, back stretches, can't take antiinflamorties because I have ulcers)

anyway couple weeks ago when I ran out of Effexor and had just changed Pdoc's but then got a call saying he didn't accept Medicaid...I was out of Effexor and having bad withdrawal, ex Pdoc said nope can't help you unless I see, soonest appt was in a month!! so I call my family DR, find out she's not in, NP gets on phone I explain it all to her

(I ended up at the ER, only place that would help me)

Her response, "Mental health would not do that to you" in other words I lied
I gave her phone #'s of My T and Intensive Case Manager, told her they would verify it...she refused to help me or even give me an appt.

so now I have to work with this women in the morning

why will she bother listening to me this time?
why bother going?
futile

got the feeling, I'm going to be dismissed...you know the depressive it's all in her head

this pain just keeps getting worse and with the damned Medicaid so many doctors don't take it

plus there's other medical probs; excessive thirst, freq. urination, blurred vision
yeah I know sounds like type 2 Diabetes

type 2 isn't that dangerous and it is probably is all in my head

I'VE JUST HAD ENOUGH

Hi,

You have every right to be fed up. Does the NP work for the family doc? Once you ever get in to see your family doc, how about telling him/her what a pain in the behind the NP has been?

I've also ended up in the ER because a doctor wouldn't renew an Rx over the phone. What a waste!

how about you tell her you are so sure of your symptoms (have read about it from hundreds of online posters blah blah blah) that you politely ask she educate herself by speaking to a professional.... and that if she is unwilling to behave in the manner expected of something in her profession, you will file a complaint with the department, the hospital, and whatever the professional body is called that registers nurses...

on the other hand, i think she is right... mental health doesn't do that to you -- rapid withdrawal of a medication does

Why not be straight forward and ask if she is familiar at all with abrupt dcing of effexor?
if she isnt, just start choking her to give her an idea of what it might be analogous to.If she is, just start choking her for witholding compassionate treatment.Deal with her on her same level of professional competence

I soooo sympathize with you. I won't go into details, but I've had a long record of absolutely lousy interactions with medical professionals.

A few years back, I found an excellent physician who charged $300 for a 45-minute visit (didn't take insurance) during which he listened, dialogued, and discussed options (including ones that I brought with me!). Unfortunately, I no longer work for the tech industry (can't afford him) and he's specializing exclusively in autism these days anyway. <sigh...>

I just had a really, really bad visit with my current doc that went somewhat like yours. My heart goes out to you; please let us know what happens!

Nurses are the biggest pain in the ass in the whole of medicine- They think they know it all and don't. I'd ask to speak to the nursing supervisor, and I don't know what state you are in but here in Louisiana we can formally complain to Medicaid about discriminatory treatment. The hospital or clinic involved can get its ass kicked with a walloping fine, especially if Medicaid is being milked by extra visits or unnessasary ER visits. And you need to call case management if you have it, because it's their job to make sure this doesn't happen to you. Ask this nurse if she's willing to risk legal action over Medicaid discrimination and negligence. Ask her if she'd let a diabetic go without insulin, because you need your meds as much as any other person with any severe chronic illness. Letting you fall off your meds is at least negligent and you need to bitch to management. Sudden med withdrawal is dangerous.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you can't squeak case management is supposed to do it for you.
It's hard to be sick and stand up for yourself, it takes a lot of energy. But you deserve better treatment.

Nose totally out of joint now,

Miss Liz

I hope that all of the pathetic, worthless medical doctors out there are one day barbecuing and accidentally set themselves on fire and burn to death...VERY, VERY slowly!

I used to go to those doctors, and totally agree they should burn in hell just for being pricks, but I changed healthcare providers (pure luck, with Medicaid, that I got in here) and the docs I have now are some of the finest human beings to walk the face of the earth. Louisiana State University Medical Center is just awesome. There are good docters that care and I'm blessed to finally have found some.
Have hope, you may find a decent doc. Look around. We all deserve good care from people who are nice to us. I feel priveleged, except for my pdoc of course. He needed some breaking ;) before he came up to snuff. But most do.

Yes, my history - stay away from NP's, they have a lot to learn. I had a lot of trouble getting my GP to figure out why I was so tired - my opinnion, his practice was too general. Now and days they all want to put it off to depression. (Dealing with idiot doctors can be depressing) After 3 years of trying different anti-depressants, that didn't work and had many side effects. I finally found a doctor (Internal Medicine) that was willing to find the root problem. I have narcolepsy, and am taking Provigil now - I'm a totally different person. My point - if something doesn't feel right - move on, find a doctor that is willing to listen.
