Least sedating SSRI?

Posted by fairnymph on July 11, 2002, at 18:27:09

Does anyone know which SSRIs are the least sedating and which are the most sedating? If you could back your statement up, either with documented proof or personal experience, I'd appreciate it greatly.

How about least amount of sexual dysfunction?

Least likely to cause weight gain, most likely to cause weight gain?

Thanks :)

Personal experiences only!

Most sedating: Paxil
Least sedating: Prozac

I think they all have similar potentials after a while. I haven't noticed major weight gain on any of them. I notice that Zoloft seems to increase appetite the most. Celexa seems to decrease appetite the most.

Fairnymph,

I have tried Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft. In my opinion, Zoloft is the least sedating and the best in regards to sexual disfunction. I don't have any real feelings in regards to the weight question (didn't notice any difference on any of them).

I do recall that while I was on Prozac, I constantly yawned and drank quite a bit of coffee to counter it's effect. Paxil for me wasn't quite as bad, although it was still sedating (I believe though, that Paxil is generally regarded as the most sedating SSRI by most people). A little irritating nuggett experienced by some people, including me, is the insomnia paradox. While these two meds did cause daytime sedation, at night they kept me awake. Luckily this went away after a couple of weeks. As far as sexual disfunction goes, I thought Paxil was worse than Prozac-especially at increasing doses.

Again for what it's worth, I thought Zoloft was the better of the three. No real feeling of tiredness, and only a little sexual disfunction. I hope this helps, but I have a feeling that you may get a lot of differing opinions.

Good Luck.

I have taken Effexor for over a year and it has never sedated me. Though sexual interest sometimes drops, but I think it's because I start getting too many warm fuzzies.

For me:
Most:Effexor
Least:Wellbutrin or Prozac

For me, it was Celexa! I know several people who gained weight on it, as well. I gained thirty pounds! Effexor and Wellbutrin curbed my appetite.

Good luck,

Celexa did curb my *appetite*, but it didn't promote any weight loss due to that. Effexor this time around does seem to create a lot of unexpected sedation! Wellbutrin does curb appetite and cause some weight loss. However, my previous trials on Focalin and dexedrine (while stopping SSRI), worked to reduce weight by several pounds in a few weeks.
