the sound of wind chimes creeps me out

Posted by mist on June 16, 2002, at 16:36:06

wind chimes are supposed to have a "beautiful" sound but hearing them gives me a creepy, eerie feeling. sometimes I have this feeling anyway, especially in the afternoon (mornings are better for me). but wind chimes exacerbate it.

does anyone know what I'm talking about? has anyone felt this? what is it?

I never like wind chimes either. I am noise sensitive though. You might be the same. They never sounded pleasant to me, and winds do not create a happy feeling either. I'm with you!

Are there wind chimes around you? Is there any way you could have them removed so they wouldn't bug you any more?

I love the gentle tinkling sound of some chimes - glass Chinese chimes especially, also the tonking of bamboo & the gentle clackering of thin shells but I hate the noisy ones. Even so, when a wind comes along, I take my chimes down - it's no longer a gentle background, off-and-on sound but crashing & banging instead. The whole idea, I think, should be a soothing feeling & if it's not doing that, get rid of them. I've used them almost 40 years now back when the neighbours assumed I was some demonic thing to have them then.

What I find much more distressing is the sound of planes (thinking back to all the WW II shows I watched as a kid) & the harsh roar of Harleys & cars with crap mufflers. I hate mechanical noises on the whole. That, & some neighbours' dogs incessantly barking.

Mist, out of curiosity, is there something about wind chimes from a memory that gets to you, or simply their sounds?

I think I'm noise sensitive too. (Very!) Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the chimes!

I hear them across the street and sometimes closer. Live in an apartment building. It's not a constant thing but made me curious as to what would cause it, why I might react that way to the sound. Objectively I can see how it could be beautiful to some, I just have a bad reaction to it. Maybe it's a type of anxiety.

LOL. Maybe they felt the way I do about the sound!? And yes, the crashing ones are really terrible to me too.

Yes I hate all these sounds too! Planes overhead scare me, especially after 9-11.

I was wondering that too but there's nothing I can recall. It's definitely an eerie feeling though, not just a dislike of the sound.

I don't like them either. Like some foreboding change in weather. They sound restless to me.
Chimes are spooky.
I sleep with a window unit A/C blowing, a fan at full speed, and an air purifier. If I have to sleep in a dead quiet house, I go nuts.....moreso.
Sounds like a wind tunnel testing lab at night around here.

Yes. Spooky. They have a haunted kind of sound.

White noise is great! I like it because it blocks out unwanted sounds.

Mist and Phil - white noise etc...

That's funny about you two - my oldest son does the same thing, HAS to have a fan going by his head to sleep. I'm the opposite. Even on hot nights when a fan blowing on me would feel good, I get creeped out & have to shut it off. I can't hear anything else & have the silly feeling that something's waiting to creep up on me. Every small noise that I can barely hear over the fan, I have to turn off the fan & check it out. It's not even a fear in me but perhaps a hold-over from my days of needing to hear my babies cry when I slept at night.

I've got another son like me who can sleep through loud noises as long as his subconscious knows the sounds come from outside. As soon as the sounds are from inside, even small noises, he wakes up.

You both ought to hear the sounds of a wind harp (aeloian harps). Now those can give spooky sounds depending on the strength of the wind. The example here isn't one of the best but gives you an idea:

Yes, I know, Dr. Bob - redirect.... :-)

BTW, mist, it wasn;'t the sound that made the neighbours wonder but the fact that only strange Oriental people had wind chimes. No self-respecting white person would have those "things" around. Same with incense - this was even before hippie days.

I think we need to ask everybody what they listen to, or not, to go to sleep. Interesting, IsoM.

I want to hear this.

But I'm hoping to find a med that will make me like chimes!

He-he.

Aeolian harps less creepy than chimes! (nm)

I almost liked their sound although I imagine something like that could get pretty spooky in its own right. The recording wasn't long enough to tell. Also a recording is sometimes different than live in the way it can make you feel.
