FROM ritalin TO adderall OR dexedrine

Posted by DiscoPuppy on June 11, 2002, at 11:15:34

Hi Guys,

This may be a non-issue - and perhaps the topic's been beated to death here on babble, BUT:

How does one (who is already on Ritalin for ADD) go about convincing his/her own doctor into trying something like Adderall or Dexedrine without sounding like a drug junkie trying to look for a new high.

I'm on Ritalin - and have been on it for about a month, but want to try out other types of stimulants - to see if there is a better fit. I'm not sure that by the very nature of my posing this question to my doctor will raise a big red flag (since it is a Sch2 controlled substance) which will not only prevent me from trying the new drugs, but also suspend me from continuing on with the Ritalin.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I took one month of Ritalin before switching to Adderall. I basically went in to my appointment and matter-of-factly told my neurologist that while I was benefiting from the productivity aspect of the Ritalin, I felt like it was beginning to make me anxious. I had read extensively on the internet that Adderall was considered to be preferred over Ritalin for ADD in adults because of the longer half life and smoothness of onset and in leaving the system. You could even print out some "data" from psychobabble tips or wherever to bring with you.

I don't think you'll look like a drug seeker at all. Just act informed and no-nonsense like. I believe Ritalin is more suspectible to abuse anyway because of it's shorter half life. I don't think Adderall is considered as abusive because of its smoother onset.

Anyway, the Adderall definitely produced a better feeling of well being for me overall. I feel focused, calm and efficient for the first time in my life. The Ritalin really was starting to make me a nervous wreck. I'm VERY glad I switched! It's your life, remember, you need to speak up and don't be afraid to ask for what you feel you need!

Good luck!

Katalina

I have to try the same thing soon, but only because I want to compare Ritalin with Dexedrine (and Provigil) for my depression. I plan to be honest with the pdoc and tell him just that. I also plan to gather whatever evidence I can that the other meds might work better than Ritalin for me. (But I hope he already knows this).

I don't think a pdoc who was willing to prescribe Ritalin in the first place would object to you trying another pstim. I think docs monkey around with meds to find the right one all the time.

Hmm... my doc started out by telling me that he was going to try me on Ritalin, Adderall and Dexedrine, each for a month or so to find out which is best for me. I would hope that other docs are open to these kinds of trials...
