Posted by opal on June 4, 2002, at 8:11:39

My doctor just put me on Adderall XR 20mg about 2 weeks ago and my weight seems to be dropping prettin fast. I was thinking about asking her to try the ritalin or dextrostat. What do you think? Please let me know. Thank You.

It probably varies with the individual. The appetite supression lessens after awhile, but if you are concerned with losing too much weight, you might switch to a shorter-acting pill, so at least you would get hungry when it wore off.

Anorexic weight loss effects of ADD stimulants

Adderall IR used to be an amphetamine diet pill called Obetrol.

Dexedrine/Dextrostat/Dextroamphetamine are supposed to be the most powerful appetite suppressing/diet pills ever made (besides of course the rarely prescribed Desoxyn-Methamphetamine Hcl Tablets). None of the substitutes such as Didrex, Sanorex (Mazindol), Phentermine, Phenmetrazine, Xenadrine (otc), etc has ever matched Dexedrine as a diet pill. Dexedrine was ate like candy by Hollywood actresses in the 50s, 60s, & 70s for many years in order to lose weight.
But the effect does wear off after 5 hours so I find you can eat lunch between doses.

I am willing to bet Adderall XR is the most powerful diet pill out there now, because since it releases the second dose six hours after the first one, you get no "break" in between where you can get hungry enough to eat lunch, so you end up eating next to nothing all day until it wears off.

Ritalin or Focalin are supposed to be less appetite suppressing than the amphetamines Dex or Adderall. It is more of a pure psychostimulant than a general CNS & psychostimulant. BUT, you cannot take Ritalin or Focalin with food an hour before or it dramatically reduces its absorption & effectiveness. I ended up losing weight fast with Ritalin since I always took it on an empty stomach. I also thought (in my own opinion) that Ritalin makes food taste gross & eating seems like a trivial activity.

If I were you I would switch to an immediate release preparation of Dexedrine/Dextrostat or Adderall. Not only will you get a "break" for lunch 5 hours after Dex or 6 six after Adderall IR, but also amphetamines are just as extensively absorbed with food or without- the difference is that on a full stomach amphetamines take longer to peak & so the effects will feel "weaker". So you could take the Adderall or Dex with breakfast in order to keep your weight up. Just stay away from foods & drinks that acidify your urine such as coffee, cola because they eliminate amphetamines from the body faster & reduce their effectiveness. Better to drink ice water or fat free milk with breakfast or any other meal when taking Dex or Adderall.

Also, I would suggest taking a weekend break from Adderall/Dex & go out to dinner (& a movie) on Friday night AND Saturday or Sunday night if you can afford it.

Weekend breaks prevent tolerance, & one good thing about Dexedrine/Dextrostat & Adderall is that they are such powerful appetite suppressants/thermogenics that while all the other people are spending billions on Xenadrine/Hydroxycut/Ripped Fuel Extreme & the less effective Metabolife to lose weight & get fatter ever year, on Dex or Adderall you can pretty much splurge all you want for 2 days a week, and you stay thin even without exercise!

It almost makes you feel guilty, like we are cheating or something, since one legal ADD prescription pill makes you more productive at work, thinner, & more sociable, all benefits sought illegally during the "fashionable" powder cocaine craze of the late 1970s, early to mid 1980s.

For me, of all things it was phentermine (Adipex-P,Fastin) I even did the infamous phen-fen routine for about 2 months-now THAT will make u forget food even exists!I've since had a complete physical, heart & lungs are fine.

I have also used phentermine on occasion to self-medicate my ADD/EDS. I just figured I was an accursed flawed addict, w/no morals or backbone!(I had no psych support at the time, & stupidly enuf, did not think I deserved it)!

Anyway, I've not lost my appetite on high doses of ritalin, Adderall, or dexedrine. But, it's true that all of those ADD drugs seem to allow mw to feel full more quickly, and I am not constantly grazing, eating something every 45 minutes because the satisfaction/pleasure channel is working far better now.

nightlight
p.s. I went from 152 to 120 in about 14 months when on my diet clinic's program. I tried to stay plump as long as possible b/c the Rx helped me function so much better!

i think i'd vote for phentermine (nm) » nightlight

Adderall caused major weight loss for me

Hi there,

I posted a similar question a few weeks back about losing too much weight on Adderall. I've been on 30 mgs. of Adderall (IR not XR) daily for the past six months or so. I've always been thin, (5'5", 110 or so) but went down to 95 lbs. on Adderall, without even realizing it. I started taking klonopin once or twice a day (.5 mgs.) and that helps me have more of an appetite at night.

I'm back to 100 lbs. now since last month and making more of an effort to eat healthy calorie dense foods. It's hard to notice, IMO, because when you're feeling great from taking a stimulant, you don't feel weak or malnourished. I couldn't figure out why everyone was telling me how thin I looked because I felt so robust and healthy. It wasn't until I was trying on summer clothes in a dept. store and the size 1's were falling off me that I realized I was starting to look a little grotesque.

Anyway, I think if you make a real effort to eat nutritionally sound and lots of complex carbs & protein then you can minimize the weight loss to some extent. I'd much rather be on this end of the weight war and be trying to gain than those who are killing themselves to lose unwanted pounds!

But by not eating as much, you also tend to lose a whole lot of muscle along with that fat, which is definatly NOT a good thing. Weight training, cardio, with a dash of high-intesity interval training and a pinch of ephedrine + caffeine, is the perfect fat loss recipe.
