liquid diet for AD weight gain??

Posted by katieb on May 15, 2002, at 20:02:23

hi everyone,

because of the 20lbs i gained on paxil in the past 5 months i went to see a holistic doctor. he now has me on the "ultrameal" plan which is basically this organic slim fast for 2 meals a day. it's not bad, and i'm really excited if it will actually help me lose weight.

question is... has anyone else tried such drastic diet measures because of med related weight gain? have they worked or is there something about the drug that just doesn't let you lose weight?

thanks!
katie

Drastic diets usually make you lose weight, then... gain it back and more. Does this doctor know about your other meds? It's VERY important. There may be counter-indications for both things happening at once. Also, it is easier to deal with one problem than two at once. You need to get better, hence the meds. The weight can be dealt with later.

If you don't want that, then why don't you switch meds? Or see a dietician? I went to see one lately and I'm trying to change my diet a bit (nothing drastic, I have enough stress these days ! Basically, more protein, which I usually eat too little of it of because I don't like meat, and more water, and exercise 3 times a week). She knows about my depression history and meds and she even said she can recommend some stuff that can help with depression. A change in the kind of wheat I eat could apparently help my depression - or at least some studies have shown this, she said.
In any case, please make sure there is no counter-indication for this liquid diet and Paxil used simultaneously. I wanted to do a somewhat drastic diet and my doc said "you know you'll gain more weight inthe end." Yes, I knew. I was hoping for a miracle, but if it sounds too good to be true - it generally is.
Exercise and small, long term changes in one's diet usually work best. More slowly, but you don't gain the weight back.

thanks for the advice. yes, my doctor does know about the paxil, and actually i taperd off of it a couple of weeks ago and am now on celexa. he suggested the liquid diet for just a month as a jump start and then i'll gradually move to a low fat, high protien diet. i'm in a wedding in august and have my college reunion this summer so i'd like to feel better about my body at least this summer!

thanks again! i will definetly address contraindications with him though next time we meet!

Good.
Actually, I'm on a somewhat liquid diet myself... More protein (I really don't eat enough and my dietician told me to eat more). I have tofu shakes for b-fast now. It's fine. I'll be getting braces in a couple of weeks, so she gave me this recipe because the first week or so, I won't be able to chew much!
Good luck!
