on 1,400 medications and (night) BLIND as a BAT!!!

Posted by Jerrympls on May 12, 2002, at 2:53:46

Can anyone help me here? I'm a 30 year old male and I am as blind as a bat at night or in dark rooms. I'll list my meds below and perhaps someone can analyize them and find that one or a combo is the culprit???

200mg Desipramine
20mg Dexedrine 3x daily
Topamax 150mg at night 100mg in morn
Atarax 100mg at night
Ativan 1mg 3x daily

I also take the following for allergies:

Zyrtec
Rhinocort nasal spray
Singualair
Combivent inhaler

I'm thinking it's the Dexedrine and the Topamax. I know the Dexedrine makes my pupils HUGE - but then you'd think I'd see better in the dark right? Hmmmm.....

Anyone??? Anyone???? I wonder if the electriciity that zaps my vegas nerve contributes?? hmmmmmm

thanks in advance!!!!

Jerry!

The only thing that comes to mind right now is that night blindness can be related to vitamin A deficiency.
Maybe one of your meds messes with your vitamin absorption?

You should talk to your doctor immediately due to the fact that you are on the Topomax. I am not sure about the other drugs you are taking (I only have personal experience from the Topomax). I tried to take it but immediately started having vision problems and my doc took me off it.

*Apparently there are FDA warnings about glaucoma and other permanent vision problems related to the direct use of Topomax*

~just my 2 cents worth~

Hi Jerry~

In my experience, all stims I've used (dex, adderall, phentermine) have blurred my vision, night or day. Don't know what the mechanism is for that, neurologically, but it has been consistent. But, my vision wd. clear as stim wore off.
Wellbutrin gave me mild hallucinatory effects, but only in the dark. I wd. see patterns or reach out for something that wasn't there, also saw (sensed?) movement at times, out of the corner of my eye. The peripheral 'phantom' thing happened often in the daytime as well. But, I think we've all experienced that slightly disturbing incident before. Maybe it was the WB, or maybe it was just 'the little man', as my grandmommy Marjorie used to call him/it...whatever!
Do check with ur dr. and let us know what He says it is.

You have a VNS implanted?

Are you part of the depression study?

Topamax can cause eye problems, but symptoms appear early on..anyway, get your eyes checked (glaucoma test)...

I'm "night-blind" (nyctalopia) too, but so is my father (and other members of my family). Nyctalopia can be inherited, caused by a dysfunctional liver, vitamin deficiency, and cataracts. Your best bet is to see an eye dr.

I assume you're sworn to secrecy about how it makes you feel? If not, I'd love to hear what you think. I have a possible chance to get one implanted early next year, and it's a hard decision to make.

Hi Jerry,

Can you please e-mail me regarding VNS?
It's my last option as I've tried anything available. Can you help?

Hi Jerrympls,

I was wondering if you get my message? Did I say anything wrong? I know, I'm very pessimistic about VNS, but if you can write me back, that would be great.
