Ron, Colin: Congrats on your SAMe coup!

Posted by beardedlady on April 17, 2002, at 12:05:11

I am so very impressed! Today, I was in Safeway and found Nature Made SAMe! Not only is it in the regular supermarket, but it's in a display in the produce section! I was buying my vidalias, and there it was! Naturally, I thought of you. Congratulations on the new account.

My best to you both. And Colin, you are certainly missed around here. I hope your block is over soon.

P.S. For those others peeping in who may be out of the loop, LOL.

Ron - I love the message below, so thought I'd tag my update onto it. You and Colin must be in the super salesman league now; hope you get a nice trip to Hawaii.

I'm glad I kept on with the SAM-e trial as it's now going well. My depression is firmly under control and I have plenty of energy during the day and good concentration at work. The only downside is I'm still getting a small amount of breakthrough anxiety (my thyroid test was fine and I'm trying to ignore the skipping heartbeats). What I'm taking at the moment is:

300mg SAM-e (alternating 200 and 400 doses)
Omega 3 fish oil capsules (800mg EPA)
High dose Vitamin B complex
Sublingual Vitamin B12

I'm still wondering whether to add some 5-HTP at bedtime for anxiety and sleep, but there doesn't seem to be much about it on this board, and a lot of the other web stuff is overtly promotional. I can't find anything about combining SAM-e and 5-HTP. Or what about GABA supplements: are they any use?

The other good thing is, if I do decide to go for baby number four, SAM-e appears to be safe during pregnancy.

Hope all is well with you, Ron, and thanks for your help.

Lizzy

Lizzy G,

You sound good. I'm happy to hear that you are doing well, by and large. The breakthrough anxiety is a tough one. I am having some similar symptoms and I wonder if I am taking too much SAM-e. My "anxiety" presents differently than yours, based on what you have posted in the past. Mine is an irritability that can escalate quickly into a rage. The best medicine I have found for my "anxiety" is good hard exercise. I plan to reduce my SAM-e dose from 200 to 100 mg/day for a trial after I use up my supply of 200 mg tablets. I don't know if this breakthrough "anxiety" is a GABA thing, a norephrinpine issue, a serotonin receptor problem, or maybe too much dopamine relative to the other neurotransmitters. Please don't misunderstand me; SAM-e pulled me out of the SSRI induced anergy and anhedonia, and I will forever be thankful. This breakthrough "anxiety" is a small inconvenience compared to where I was six months ago (i.e. before SAM-e).

I know nothing about 5-HTP (other than it is expensive and a serotonin precursor).

>Or what about GABA supplements: are they any use?

From what I've read, GABA does not readily cross the blood brain barrier, but I could be wrong. I have an almost full bottle of GABA along with the rest of the many supplements I tried prior to finding SAM-e. It's been awhile, but as I recall the GABA supplements didn't do much. But that's just me.

Thanks Beardy. Colin had extra time on his hands while he was blocked so he was able to sign the contract with Safeway (US food store). Speaking of being blocked, I am concerned that Dr. Bob will consider this type of discussion to be "non-medication" in nature and will redirect us. He has enough on his plate so we should probably try to make life easy on him. If this were not the case, we could try to point out that laughter is good medicine and bonding with friends is neuroprotective. None-the-less, I suspect Dr. Bob would say, fine well and good to my arguement, but redirect these "soft" medicine issues to PS. My problem is I never go to PS. Maybe I should start.

Thanks for your humor and friendship, Beardy.

I hope I did not offend my friend Beardy! (nm) » beardedlady
