Stay with it for another 4 weeks and add Lithium or pindolol if you don't get a response by that time. BTW, Treat all the MAOI side-effects with stuff like Bethanechol (anticholinergic effects), Propranolol (tremor), and Verapamil (cardio/headaches).

Ross, stick with it - don't get discouraged. All I can offer are words of encouragement.

I don't have the same problems as you or take the same meds, but have always found that whatever I've been taking, the total effects don't kick in right away. As the weeks go on, the benefits start showing more & more. You're still only on day 13. Like YSA West mentioned, you may need a bit extra added.

If you give up now, you'll be back, not at square one, but in the negative zone. Remember, Ross, we are here to support you, & I, for one, am really glad to hear of any progress you're making.

So Ross, whenever you're feeling discouraged & can't manage to feel hopeful, come back here & reread the words of encouragement.

If you look around this world, it's obvious that there's lots of hurt in it, but it's amazing how creative & productive we can be & overcome lots if we can manage to lick our depression or at least, get it under control. I'm expecting great things from you... Just kidding, no pressure on you really, but I'll bet you'll feel like a different person soon. I know I do.

ross,

You're ahead of me, any words of wisdom?

I started on 15 mg of Nardil 10 days ago, today is my third day of 30 mg.

I think I'm fortunate that I've been on Lamictal. I haven't noticed a drop in mood. I've been expecting it though, because I stopped taking Welbutrin to start the Nardil.

I was taking 150 SR of Welbutrin 1x day. My neurologist had me drop down to 75 mg-non SR for 7 days then start the Nardil the next day. He said there wouldn't be an interaction problem because the Welbutrin doesn't have a long half-life and the Nardil takes at least 2 weeks to achieve full enzyme inhibition.

I haven't really noticed anything. I am anxious for something to happen - because I'm doing this to try to help my migraines. Being in constant pain, to the point of incapacitation, is just as bad as being depressed.

Hope things go well for you. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the both of us.

Hi Ross, Morgana,

I've told Ross before that it took me 5 weeks for nardil to kick in, and when it kicked in, it was total--everything felt different.

In the last few years, after many years on nardil, it stopped working for me. Of the twenty or so combinations I tried, lamictal and nardil was the only one that worked. Unfortunately, I dropped lamictal because of a large weight gain (due to retaining fluid) and then I totally fell into the deepest depression that I had experienced since I had been on nardil.

Morgana, how long did it take the lamictal to kick in for you? It seemed like it also took a long time for me; I guess I'm a slow responder, but the only drugs that have worked for me had no side effects (except weight gain).

Hang in there: both of you,

Shelli

The one very important thing you have to remember when taking NARDIL is to avoid DEMEROL (Meperidine), a powerful pain killer used frequently in both hospital and non-hospital settings.

Combining the two will have you taking an eternal dirt nap, and I don't think you want that.

When I was on it, I carried a laminated card in my wallet that said I was taking this drug, and not to administer DEMEROL (if I were unconscious, or unable to speak). You may want to do the same.

Personally, the MAOI's were a big disappointment for me but I'm glad that you're responding well to this particular drug.

There's a new MAOI coming out, something a pharmacist told me some time back, but given the paranoia of the FDA and the greed of drug companies, the release date of such is questionable at best.
