lithium

Does lithium have any effect on dopamine? Would it cause any EPS? I am concerened because I will not take any medications that have any blockage whatsoever on dopamine. I get terrible dystonia from anything that blocks dopamine.

Hi bd21,

I have trouble with DA antagonists, too, for the same reasons. I was on lithium for a long time and it actually seemed to relieve some of the dystonia I would get from Prozac (back when I was on Prozac+Lithium). However, I would get quite a bit of deep tendon reflexes on it though. Thigh muscle "thumps", stuff like that. Li would probably be a good thing for mild psychotic symptoms if you can't take anti-psychotics.

I have bipolar with major depression. Will the lithium help my depression? I refuse to take any anti-depressants because paxil made me look severly mentally ill because of the dystonia it gave me.

I think it's worth a try. If you are truly
bipolar it works very well. It worked very
quickly for me (within 7 days) and it is a very
pacifying drug - it does need monitoring though,
and your thyroid may eventually need supplmentation
with Synthroid.

Yes, it does help, and I have found that Neurontin helps too(with bipolar depression). I haven't tried Lamictal yet-that one is also supposed to be good for that. I would like to hear about responses that other bp2's have with combo mood stabilizers such as Lithium+Neurontin+Lamictal+Klonopin. I really think there are *ways* to get around needing to take standard AD's for BP depression with *superior* efficacy and tolerability. I would personally like to try a very low-dose newer pstim with some of the above mood stabilizers.

I really feel there are solutions to most of these puzzles with present day meds.
