Has anyone been able to lose weight on Celexa?

Posted by genelowery on February 18, 2002, at 17:15:56

I am looking for success stories on weight loss on Celexa. I had gained a considerable amount of weight on Trazadone and was switched to Celexa. I was hoping a diet and exercise will help me lose weight. Any advice? Thanks
Gene

From the things I read on Celexa, and my experience with it, weight gain is not a big problem. You must remember though, the medicine does not cause the weight gain. It is the increase in appetite from your mood feeling better. You basically get back your appetite. That is the big problem with Remeron. The appetite increase causes the weight gain. So, if you have the self-control to eat good foods, and things that speed the metabolism, you most likely will lose weight before you gain it. These SSRI's all seem to cause stomach distress though, with Celexa ranking among the lowest for stomach distress. At times, I get bloated from the Celexa, (but not nearly as bad as Zoloft!) and it appears to me that I am gaining weight. It is just bloating, or possibly water retention, in reality. So, shoot for a diet high in protein, drink a lot of water, (to flush out what you retain.), eat smaller and more frequent meals, and watch the complex carbohydrates. You will be fine on Celexa, or any other antidepressant, if you do these things.

I have been on Celexa for 2 1/2 years. I have not gained any weight. I probably lost a few pounds. I eat less because I feel less anxiety.

i have had years of expierence with celexa. i started originally on a small dose then have worked up to 80mg (i think as large as one can go)
i have never gained any weight. If anything I have heard that celexa (but this works both ways with all meds it seems) has a tendency to stimulate. But this seems to change from person to person.

THE ONLY DRUG THAT WILL DESTROY YOUR WEIGHT FOR SURE IS ZYPREXA

i have seen tons of people turn into ballons, added weight of 30lbs in six weeks almost. even know one guy who put on 80lbs and I have never gained any weight through medication and i have been on large doses of depakote, lithium, and also risperdal.

i disagree with the person who said that the drugs don't put on the weight, the eating does, i swear, when i was on zyprexa i could not stop eating. but also my entire body slowed down. to a one note pulse

I lost weight on Celexa but it's hard to know whether that was caused by the drug itself or because when I was depressed I was sluggish and ate a lot of junk!

The short answer is: no. However, I was not on it that long. A related, longer answer is that it really whacked my blood pressure when getting up from sitting and esp. lying down. This was a particular problem in the gym when your workout involves getting on various machines in various posistions, stretching, etc. It also made me very tired, therefore, decreased my excercise but not my appetite, etc, etc. I DID NOT LIKE THIS DRUG.

I take this drug too SJB, and I feel you about the slugishness. I am a gym rat too, and I have no desire to train with this med. It is helping my OCD symptoms though. It has done good. I am just going to do some combining of a few vitamins and supplements with this stuff to give me the energy and motivation boost. I would rather not fool with things like Adderal and Ritalin. They make you way too alert, and on alarm all the time.

Frankie.
